Eagles were incredibly fun vehicles. My friends used to borrow his aunts whenever we had snowstorms and go out to play in the snow or go to the trails and attempt to hill climb it. His aunt never had the right tires for doing so, but it would almost make it to the top every time.
That one rusted out on me and being used to restore one I bought from the desert and am currently painting. But it was fun while it lasted. Was unstoppable with 28x9.50r15 Super Swampers. Even better in sand than a CJ on 32s I used to drive. I cant wait to get this new one with good paint and a custom interior job.

They had a sportier model, a hatchback, which was also pretty cool.
I used to have a Spirit. Was also a fun car with a 4 speed, but wasn't overly durable. Would love to have another one w/a 304 cu.in. V8 which I believe was only available in the AMX model.

Yeah the coveted SX4. The vehicle that had AMC gotten into turbocharging could have annihilated the Buick Grand National if it held on to see the 4.0 introduced. It basically would have been the precursor to what people buy a Raptor for today. The lightweight and independent front suspension which is upgradeable are really fairly durable in design. Even my wagons weigh just under the Maverick and have a drivetrain that weight twice as much or more. The SX4 was a lil romper. I think there is even a popular 80s toy called rompers or something that had a SX4/Spirit body. If only they had a lil money to survive till manufacturing technology got out of the stone age AMC could have really done something.

Just did some quick math. A jeep 4.0 weighs 42lbs less than the AMC 258 and that equals out for a turbocharger and the SX4 with 4x4 weighs 310lbs less than a Buick GNX supercar. Turbo 4.0 kits pretty much start at the same power levels of the GNX. Would've been killer.

That's exactly the trim I was thinking of. I've only recall seeing them in red, but black looks darn sharp too. My Spirit was red, had the Pontiac 2.5L four with a Ford 4 speed and manual steering and brakes. Sadly, I think AMC borrowed some of the worse components available for my car. Nonetheless, it was a blast to drive on some of the twisty country back roads, but despite the incredibly tight limited slip diff. it sucked in the snow. It was a blast to wind up and launch with a stick though, it could fishtail with the best of them and even chirp tires into third gear with that combination which was quite amazing given this combination.
My friend's uncle had an AMX, a '79 I think it was, with the 258 engine. He kept it stored in a barn for years, though I've no idea if he still has it.

Now imagine what AMC could have done with this chassis if they had the idea and technology to have modified it into a two-door 4WD pickup...

Been from Atlanta to Montana, Seattle, Portland, west coast at least 15 times on 2-wheels...it is actually quite comfortable if it is not toooooo hot!

This one is worth framing or as a screen saver.

This was just outside Yellowstone in Wyoming. Shot with my drone. I agree, it's probably one of the best photos I took on the trip!

did you notice any bid difference in MPG with change in speed?
I have a pretty heavy foot, I especially did out there on those long Western roads. I'm sure that's a big reason why my MPG was so low

Wrong platform but it's the same idea. I think the Eagle would have made for a compelling concept to production model. However, this does look pretty awesome for its time.

Hey all! We just got back from a cross country road trip in our Maverick! We started from eastern Pennsylvania and drove though Kansas to Colorado where we took the Mav to the top of Pikes Peak! Then we went from there to Arches national park in Utah before heading down to the Grand canyon. From there we went down and spent the night in the Sonoran desert of Arizona then woke up early and drove out to San Diego. We drove Rt 1 and 101 all the way up the coast of California to the redwoods and after that we went up through Washington and back down to the badlands in South Dakota before heading home.

Total trip time 12 days and 7,749 miles. Average mpg 24.5 (according to the dash). Total gas cost was $1,480

We lived out of the Maverick and slept in a tent the whole time and I could not have imagined a better vehicle for this trip.

It was comfortable, smooth, and dependable. Although the gas mileage sounds low, to me that's not bad for an AWD sport utility. We had plenty of storage for all our camping gear and we were able to get anywhere we needed to go, even up the scary muddy shoulderless mountain roads to the campsite in Colorado!

Nice Im gonna do something similar when we pick up our Tremor. Wedding in Ohio in march, then race my dad(he will be flying) to his trailer on the border in Texass, then NM, CO, UT, AZ and all they have to offer then maybe Frisco and down to SD to put the well broken in new truck on a boat bound for Maui. Did a trip like that in our Eagle a few years back super fun.
Super! A shame about the demise of AMC. The Eagle was an icon. One of the first 4WD sedans, correct?

Must be Jackson Lake and the Tetons facing west. North of Jackson Hole.

Sedan, wagon, coupe, hatchback, 2dr sedan, gremlin shaped thing, sport convertible. After everything they learned from those vehicles, they used all that they learned from those Eagles to design the Jeep XJ and ZJ. Two of the best daily driver offroaders ever made.
