Essh.... This makes me feel ookey. I guess technically you can turn it off, but they can still harvest it when it's serviced.

Anyone else uncomfortable about driving a vehicle where they recommend "Inform passengers and other drivers of the vehicle that Connected Vehicle Information is being collected and used by us and our service providers."?

Or "Information about the usage of vehicle features, services, and technology (such as which features are used), and information about what is listened to in the vehicle (such as radio presets, volume, channels, media sources, title, artist, and genre)."?

😬

I guess we know how they're getting the Ford connect even on base trim... They're selling our data...

It dont make a rats as* to me if someone wants to know any of that information about me or my vehicle.

If it helps in future offers or development, I’m all for it.

Everything is getting information from us.

I just got a new phone and everything on it collects data for a variety of reasons. Just the norm of today’s society. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you carry a smart phone in your pocket?

They do the same thing.
The phone in my pocket can go in a faraday bag, and in my last position, it stayed there until we were done running labs for the day. Much more difficult to drive in a bag.

and yes, i personally am very aware of just what data aggregation can do. I did it as a forensics tech and analyst back right after the Y2k situation, and my last lab location was the same as ESWD. (Augusta, GA) we shared networks.

And when you get a speeding ticket based off of what your trucks gps says you were doing?

Or when your warranty is declared void because you were driving dangerously or had inadequate fluids?

Or when Ford's servers are hacked by Russians who brick your truck by sending out Bitcoin mining malware?

😬

That does not mean that we have to be ok with that. I may try to deny Ford this data out of principal... Turn off connected data sharing and do a master reset before services... That being said...I bet it's not really gone.

The only way to prevent data from getting leaked is to never have it gathered to begin with. Once it is collected, it is a matter of time and opportunity.

at this point you have 2 options if you want data consistency: so many sources so that is is a Herculean task to overwrite them all or so much noise that the data becomes meaningless. I should write a packet injector that shows I am listening to PDQ Bach, insane clown posse and Justin Bieber simultaneously.

Not about that.

You joke, but I have considered putting in a physical disconnect.

I am not import enough with anything I do, nor is any of my personal IP valuable enough to waste humint on. I have zero belief that anyone is going to try and personally attack me. Now, back in the day when our clients stared at net worth 10M, different story. All of my valuable NDAs are expired, the principals are deceased except for one who advertises his former status as part of his corporate marketing and runs his operations out of Cyprus.

For me it really comes down to 2 issues: they are profiting off of my data, while I have to pay for that data, and two, the casual/opportunistic attack and or bricking from a software input or error.

I already had my 2007 HCH2 once stolen because campus police at one of my institutions insisted I had gotten 14 tickets and so they towed my car. Turns out my plate was 1 digit off of a 2014 Honda Civic who had gotten 14 tickets, they towed the wrong car. it was a friday night and they told me to deal with it on monday. Fortunately I was an FFL at the time and had inventory in my car. It was an interesting conversation that ended with me saying they could go get my car now or I could speed dial my local BATFE revenuer and lt them know the university had unlawfully removed unsold firearms from my control. Bureaucracy won out that night as they had no desire for federal involvement and more time wasting.

What happens when they put in the wrong VIN to brick because someone has not paid their lease and it disables the vehicle for towing? Better to not have that capability ( yes we used that method on some vehicles we recovered when I was in the PI business we were a full service service)

or, how many times has windows decided my copy is pirated and deactivated itself? Why would I pirate windows when my lenovo came with enterprise oem windows?

You live long enough, it happens.

A smartphone is WAY more intrusive than anything Ford can make up. We've never been more easily tracked and sold to, ever...but (like most things) there are upsides.
