I'm not used to having a locking tailgate.....not only that, you can hit the lock button on the key fob, while the trunk is still open.
There isn't an alert. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
In my case, I lock the car and forget to walk around and check that the tailgate is closed. It's happened a few times now. I had driven 30 minutes on the freeway with the tailgate fully open. 😳
Thankfully the bed mat helped and I didn't lose anything out of the back of the truck, lol

I have had many trucks and it happens to me from time to time. Left the tailgate down on the freeway and passerby pointed. I always thought it would be better to replace the seat bell chime with a tailgate chime. or you can just mount a flag on the tailgate visible in the rearview mirror.

I once drove from the job site home, about an hour highway, got home and my hammer was on the bumper! I’m so lucky….I love that hammer!
If the tailgate was down, and the hammer was in the bed, and the tailgate overhangs the bumper, how did the hammer get on the bumper?

Wait it gets better as you get older LOL ,I look for my keys at least 3 times a week sometimes for quite a bit of time LOL . I like the rear camera suggestion duly noted!
I'm not even 30 yet, and do this constantly. You're telling me it gets worse? 😆

Buy an Apple air tag. You will still lose your keys, but finding them will be much easier. Allows you to ping the keys and get directions to walk right to them. Works with Apple best and android with a downloadable app.

Driven trucks all my life and never run into that alerted me that the tailgate was down. I left it down one time and forgot. I commenced to back right up into a tree in my friend’s yard. Crumpled the tailgate. This was before cameras were invented. Came back the next day and my friend had put caution tape up around his tree just for me. A good friend In deed. The thing is to this day I can’t say I have forgot about my tailgate.
This is exactly why I think the backup camera placement on the tailgate on these trucks is really stupid. When the tailgate is down, you have no back up camera, which is when you need it the most because your vehicle is now 18" longer and you might have stuff extended out the back. And you are probably going to be backing up close to something to unload .
For all the effort they put into designing this bed for "real world" useage, they missed on the back up cam.

I know this is an old thread. But as it turns out, many Maverick buyers are first time truck owners. It could stand to be revisited here. Maybe Ford could offer an optional tailgate indicator in the cubbie for truck newbies.

I'm not a truck newbie, but my old truck was an 05, no backup cameras. Only happened once...lol
