I'm not used to having a locking tailgate.....not only that, you can hit the lock button on the key fob, while the trunk is still open.
There isn't an alert. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
In my case, I lock the car and forget to walk around and check that the tailgate is closed. It's happened a few times now. I had driven 30 minutes on the freeway with the tailgate fully open. 😳
Thankfully the bed mat helped and I didn't lose anything out of the back of the truck, lol

Driven trucks all my life and never run into that alerted me that the tailgate was down. I left it down one time and forgot. I commenced to back right up into a tree in my friend’s yard. Crumpled the tailgate. This was before cameras were invented. Came back the next day and my friend had put caution tape up around his tree just for me. A good friend In deed. The thing is to this day I can’t say I have forgot about my tailgate.

If a bed cover impedes a direct view by eyeball, can take two seconds to pop it into reverse (or enable the rear camera via the touch screen).

Picture pointing at the ground/pavement? Tailgate is down.

Yikes, I'll remember that, and to use my reverse camera....still new to me.

Yes, you were lucky that bedmat kept everything in.

With the Maverick there are a lot of first-time truck owners and hopefully your post will help them remember a minivan or SUV has a rear hatch open indicator on the instrument panel but a pickup truck does not have a tailgate open indicator.

Without a tonneau cover one can see the tailgate out the back window but with a tonneau the tailgate can't be seen. As WannaMav said above, the rear camera will be looking at the ground, but only helpful if you back up before leaving with the tailgate open.

I've driven trucks for years and accidents can and do happen. Thanks for sharing.

Anybody see the correlation between truck and flag?
Anybody know how to stop all the unwanted messages that come across the radio screen while I’m driving?
All are very distracting. Some messages indicate I should keep my attention on the road, as the message is the only reason I’m distracted😂😂!
