Apparently the Prius engine revs at least. It pops too 😎.

My only frame of reference is my wife's Hybrid Rav4. You cannot rev her car in neutral. Her car at startup in start in electric mode, then will cycle the engine briefly. I believe it is an internal check to verify both systems are operating properly. Her car (depending on state of charge) will allow me to go in full electric out the neighborhood and several miles before the IC engine kicks in. ( this requires judicial use of a light foot on acceleration) .

Are you thinking of an all electric vehicle maybe? Like revving up the silence.
Cuz a hybrid engine sounds like a 2 cycle chain saw.
Reports/videos from that Canadian dude say it's pretty quiet

My 2020 escape is my point of reference. Just doesn't seem right revving that engine....starts in elect mode till you get on it.

The reason for the original question was a passing (and long gone) thought of would an I4 or V6 hybrid engine be good for a resto mod, like a 60s Mustang. Of course, ignoring the transverse, longitudinal issue. I then thought "who would want a vintage pony car that didn't go vroom vroom?" The idea was quickly discarded, but this thread still increased my understanding significantly!

Why are people saying yes. I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

Neither my prius nor my escape hybrid will no load rev above 1500 rpm in park or neutral. My duratec v-6 engines are no load governed as well. My 3.7, 4.6, 4.9, 5.0, 5.8, 7.3 and 7.5 engines will rev to redline in neutral. I’m expecting the 2.5 atkinson to be rpm governed. Just hope it keeps running in subzero temps - passenger compartments get pretty chill in winter in the hybrids unless hvac is set to max heat and the internal combustion engine (ice) runs a high idle.

Sometimes wish for a hand throttle and choke…

I have a ‘22 hybrid Maverick, and yes you can rev the hybrid’s engine, but only technically. Realistically, when the truck is in “Park,” you can activate the ICE by pressing on the accelerator pedal. Once the engine is on, pressing the pedal all of the way down puts the truck into high idle, and removing your foot from the accelerator pedal results in the truck going back into normal/generator idle. You cannot rev all of the way to the moon, you can only switch between high and low idle.

With that being said, I have not attempted to double pedal or mess with the truck in any of the other transmission positions or drive modes to see what the truck will do. Interested to know if anybody has done the same thing in Neutral or while holding the brake pedal down in Drive.
