So we tried this out this with a Flated (@FLATED Guy @FLATED HQ) this past weekend.i didn't get alllllll the photos but here's the basics.

We used pvc poles to built a frame for the suv hatch tent we found on Amazon. It has an awning attached. The pvc just hooks onto the latch for the tailgate.

The bed platform rests on the top rails of the flexbed part. That part is built in place. The half that extends onto the tailgate has latches so it can come off and attaches in place. Mattress folds in half. That part of the build has adjustable legs so it can be used as a table also.

Is it perfect? No. But we slept 2 adults, a 4 year old, and a 65 lb dog in the bed of the maveric way more comfortably than an air mattress.

I also built a drawer thing out of an old desk for easy storage. Instead of slides I used felt that slides on plywood with a thick coat of poly.

REI having their sale now. Other places will be also, or will be very soon for Memorial Day.
4 person tent
double wide sleeping pad (NOT an air mattress)
Exped deep sleep or Megamat are great, as is a Stoic Double Cloud.
For cold weather, the BigAgnes Dream Island is a great bag too.

saves 1/2 - 2/3 of your truck bed (just floor area) for gear and no need to empty the bed to setup your bed, or pack up your bed to drive to a trailhead, store, etc.

I'm OMW to REI right now to get the Exped mattress. I have a trifold 4 inch, but took away all of the bedspace while getting to the camping spots.

why not just a tent?
That's what I'm saying and I have a cap. A ground tent provides a ton of space. The other thing for me is where does the cooler go if I'm sleeping in the bed? I'd have to put it in the cab, backseat. I've looked at these setups, but can't yet pull the trigger.

Flated is a topper/shell/camper. You can drive with this and protect your gear. You can't drive with a tent.
I can drive the Maverick with an awesome and large camping tent.

why not just a tent?
With a tent you've got a lot more setup and takedown. If you want to be comfortable you have to mess with an air mattress, sleeping bags, leveling ground and whatever else.... With this setup, it takes 10 minutes to make and break camp, we have more protection from bugs and snakes too. All our gear is clean and organized at our fingertips.

We can camp for a night, and move on without an issue. Tent camping took at least an hour to break camp. Might be easier if you're solo, but for our family this is easier. We are planning a road trip this summer as well. This allows us to just be more flexible.

Nice! Good old American ingenuity. As to a tent, you can take a regular tent or shelter for living/dining quarters when you are in no hurry. Use a net with a weighted throw rope to hoist your cooler up in a tree to avoid bears.
CONGRATULATIONS!

There are SUV tents that give you the space and privacy of a large tent but it is attached to the bed of the truck allowing you to sleep off the ground. If you make a platform that sits on the wheel wells it gives you lots of room underneath for you to build drawers you can pull out with you clothes and cooking gear. Search YouTube as there a lots of videos from nomads who live in their vehicles 24/7. People have already figured this out, you just need to copy and improve on what they did.
