Put mine o. Today. While I would not say it's viewable at any angle. It sure is when viewing from the rear.

After reading all the horror stories about Mavs being rear ended and totaled for what looks like minor damage. I ordered a weather tech bump step. I am having second thoughts now. Mostly because it looks like it will block the view of the license pate. Really don't like being pulled over by the cops.
I have had one going on year and half, not a scratch on my bumper and when backing up can clearly see distance on screen how far to back up. As for accident protection its basically plastic very low speed it may help, hi steed your screwed it going to collapse. As for cops seeing your plate no problem if he's behind you, if he's on your left he may be blocked. You dont want a metal bar in you hitch thats what totals cars its a extention of your frame and will damage the unibody if hit hard enough. stick with the plastic and pray, I love mine.

The Weathertech bumpstep will do almost nothing in an accident. The hitch is directly mounted on the frame, and any impact with it will almost certainly deform the frame members. Frame damage in the rear makes it a writeoff, as each member costs US$24k to replace. If you're really worried about an accident, remove the hitch and change the rear brake lightbulbs to eye-searing superbright LEDs. They aren't legal in most places, but I doubt that anyone is checking. If you don't want to remove the hitch, then always tow a really poorly built trailer to take the hit instead.
Great advice, he may also consider that if he were rear ended, at a slight angle, the step would turn his truck into a pit maneuver, style accident. UGH

I too would buy one of Dave MacNeil's Weathertech bump step but for one reason, If I did my Maverick could still fit into my 1-car garage but I could not, not during the winter. The garage door could close. But I would not fit inside. Oh sure, I could get rid of the tool benches and all the tool cabinets so that the Mav and I could commune while I smoke cigars, on a chair in the man cave all winter long. So, the simple fix is leave that step off, roll my chair in next to tools and Mav and puff away. LOL

Why?
Are you extremely short or something?

The big trucks use those because the average person can’t reach over the very high sheet metal and reach the bottom of the bed.

Its likely not a problem with the Maverick unless you‘re 5’ or less.
Yeah lol I'm 5'6.
I can step up from the tailgate, but it makes a crack or pop sounds, sounds like I'm gonna break something.
