That would be great to see it already done as a solar roof. So here is my final form of your design, with a hopper foot extension. Total solar paneled turtle shell. 1000w of unlimited power ( insert evil laugh). Sides and back flip up during the day. the front one angle as a air dam during transport.
Those side dimensions look a bit too tall ( more than half the Maverick truck bed )

it is tall, but i measured how high it needed to be without me slouching over. The nice thing about wood..... You can chop it down if you change your mind!

Well don’t cut too soon, thinking the lower strips would be logically be one way plastic mirrors. So we can see out without having to tilt out a solar panel to view the outside world at night.

Already ditched the foot hopper design. To a simple box shape that is open on the inside. Just push to the outside with your feet and you got a handy flat surface outside for just about anything while sitting on the exposed tailgate. Instant grill / stove table top etc.

I wonder if the foam exercise pads (come in 2x2ft squares which can connect together) could be cheap wall insulation or matting?

Wow this thread was hard to find. Dropped all my internet domains after the Chinese got a list of key peoples outlook email accounts and hacked them. Turns out I still was an administrator for the DNS system, didn’t know. But good to know if I get banned here, lol. Think I am up to three strikes already, so definitely didn’t want to call people old fart.
Anyway, this is something I wanted to paint on a foamie camper build. Its getting less and less expensive and simpler. Cooling below ambient temperatures paint.

Great design for a foamie, really like the back wall tilt. Need a thick header but I already had that in mind for the slightly pitched solar panel roof. Its a true camper shell with extra long back wall. Adding the bed and side cabinets keep the weight down since they hide the unfinished look. Do plan on keeping the tailgate in-place for my Maverick.

Found a pic of the raw bones of the camper above, very clever, hing details for back wall is very uncomplicated. Smart use of a torsion box across the back for strength. Wooden i-beams.
