Anybody else experience signifiant brake grab when the brakes are cold/wet?

As the weather is getting colder now the brakes are really annoying when first starting out. I lurch like I’m popping aclutch when I just touch the brakes.

Anyone else? Any fix?

Had this myself after some recent rain and colder weather. Definitely surprised me a bit.

Perhaps condensation on the brake rotors? Back when I parked outside, I had this on multiple vehicles. Especially on a very humid morning. It always went away after gently applying the brakes a time or two.

Hope this isn't a common issue. In my neck of the woods, it's "cold" about six months of the year.

I live in south Texas and we have a lot of dust and it’s very humid. When it does rain, all that mixed causes brake grab when pulling out of parking space. So yes. I do experience this but it also happened with my Ram and Chevy.

I'll let you know next week when the first false winter hits Alabama.

I’ll know more when we hit -30F in a couple months. Our hybrid brakes were grabby the first couple hundred miles, and not realizing the Auto Hold was turned on. But after that they are not so grabby.

I changed my pads early on. Coming from an Escape Hybrid with it's awful brake issues (same as Maverick Hybrids) and seeing the pads leaving deep scratches on the rotors, I decided I'd rather spend the money and change the pads early on. These stock pads are lower tier than the lowest tier you would buy from a brick and mortar auto store. The pads on the Maverick when I got it were used for 11k and I was noticing the same exact wear on the rotors as my previous Escape had. After 3k with the new pads, it's already noticeable on the rotors the wear is more "normal".

good to know. What did you swap in? I like to run EBC on my other vehicles, but haven’t even thought about pads yet the Mav.

I seem to remember some issues with not being able to get the rear ones off due to some mode being unavailable without their fancy scan tool. How did you get around that?

I went with Powestops from Rock Auto. Nothing crazy and still most would consider overkill, but the Z23 lineup. Z17's would be your standard metallic pads and the Z23's are the ceramic blends. So, mid tier. No reason to go any higher.

I'm not familiar with EBC. I would personally push for 8-10k before making that call though, just to guage. Lots of people report not having any, or not noticing any issues.

No solution. You have to use FDRS to force it. It cannot be done with ForScan. I had no choice but to pay the mechanic to do it. Too much risk involved with the electronic parking brake and the vacuum on the system. It's not like the ones we are used to without e parking brakes. Even a hairs width of air in that system from pushing that caliper in can damage everything and that's assuming the parking brake doesn't engage after disconnecting the battery or something. Without disabling it before removing, the risk is killing your entire system.

So, to all considering changing pads, there is a sticky in that sub with all this info and the "how to" directly from the manual, but before doing anything - check if you can enter brake service mode!

Here is the sticky:
