I've only ever used that tool (if you mean piston compress tool), after I already had to squeeze pads back a little to get the caliper off anyway - so long screwdriver well placed was it to start with.
If you are putting back same pads then you don't need extra distance supplied by pressing the piston in more than enough to move the caliper.
But indeed maintenance mode even for that short distance.

I have always used a plain large C clamp with piece of thin wood . Used clean cotton rag to soak up extra fluid in brake master cylinder if needed as you push brake pad cylinder back in .

From another person's post, I tried seeing what rent a tool is available. Advanced Auto Parts makes you fully buy the kit but says that If I return all the parts intact, they will do a full refund as long as I have the receipt. So I just bought a full brake job tool set and will try to have it returned in a few days.

My truck won't enter maintenance mode no matter what combination I try so I guess I'm doing this the hard way

Sorry to hear that. This is the procedure as I understand it. Is this what you've been trying?

SERVICE MODE ACTIVATION
This procedure or the scan tool will deactivate the EPB and EBB systems. First, clear all EPB and EBB related DTCs.
  1. Set the ignition to ON
  2. Release the EPB
  3. Press & hold the accelerator pedal and hold the EPB switch in the RELEASE (downward) position.
  4. Switch the ignition to OFF and then back ON within 5 seconds. Continue holding the accelerator and EPB switch.
  5. Switch the ignition to OFF and then release the accelerator and EPB switch.
The brake system should be deactivated, preventing brake application until the service mode is deactivated. The yellow EPB indicator will illuminate and Maintenance Mode will display in the message center.
When replacing brake pads in service mode, the brake caliper piston must be compressed into the caliper as usual. The piston does not have to be rotated while compressing the piston.

SERVICE MODE DEACTIVATION
  1. Set the ignition to ON
  2. Press & hold the accelerator pedal
  3. Hold the EPB switch in the APPLY (upward) position
  4. Firmly press the brake pedal for at least 1 second. Release the brake pedal while continuing to hold the accelerator and EPB switch.
  5. Switch the ignition OFF and then back ON within 5 seconds, then release the accelerator and EPB switch.
Once the ignition is set to ON, the EPB system will immediately apply and release the parking brake to guarantee sufficient air gap between the rear pads and disc.
If the EPB switch is not released prior to completion of this sequence, it will apply the EPB, which will have to be released before moving the vehicle.
When Brake Maintenance Mode is deactivated, the yellow Parking Brake and red Brake Warning indicators turn off, and "Brake Maintenance Mode" no longer appears in the message center.
Apply the brake several times to verify correct operation.

NOTE: Brake pads with adhesive backing are 1-time use only. If the pads are separated from the caliper, new pads must be installed to prevent noise and shudder.

Literally that exact method from the service manual. There is even a youtube video of someone doing it with the lariat's push button start that I followed and it didnt work either. I tried the alternate version where you actually attempt to do so with the vehicle in the off state first that was used on an escape I think. Just nothing at all.

I used the service several times, as long you bring back the tools in the same condition you got it you'll be good to go.
