I second the App via CarPlay or Android Auto. However, there are some receivers you can buy that have bluetooth transmitters built in. Just depends on your use case. Do you travel mainly where there is adequate cell signal? Go with the App. Driving through the wilderness? Get a receiver with bluetooth capabilities. Roady BT comes up when I do a Google search for receivers with Bluetooth.

So Android auto? I have the Motorola wireless adapter and it has worked great using XM app.

I've read other threads where people added XM, I'm too lazy to search right now.

My Lariat has the XM radio, so I use that, but I have had very good luck using the app on my motorcycle. I can't speak for sound quality as it's hard to tell that on a motorycle, but it does use less data than I thought. I've listened all day on long trips and not used even close to a gig. My guess is it buffers pretty decent as even in areas of spotty cell phone signal, I've not had drop out issues.

If it were me, i'd give the app a try before spending the money on a dedicated receiver. If data usage or sound quality were an issue, then maybe a receiver would be the way to go?

On edit: I just noticd the OP has a Lariat. Do all Lariats have Sync 3 with XM capabilities built in, or just some? Is they do, then it's as easy as just adding a subscription.

It may have been said already - if your receiver doesn't support XM, I'd probably run it from an App on your phone. XM radio App is supported on both iPhone / CarPlay & Android Auto / Google Store.

I checked my subscription a few days ago and noticed XM offers a streaming only option at a reduced cost.

If you use the App make sure your data plan has enough "runway" for you to stream XM before you would trigger a limit or throttle based upon your negotiated mobile plan with your provider (i.e. ATT, T-Mobile, etc).

If you're in an area that has marginal 4G/5G network service, I'd buy an XM Bluetooth receiver and use it which receives the transmitted XM signals via satellite and then you can be anywhere in North America ( not sure about the North Pole ) and receive XM depending on which bird(s) aka satellites they're broadcasting from.

If you drive in an area with poor cell service, get a RoadyBT receiver from the XM radio site, Crutchfield, BestBuy, or elsewhere. Mount the antenna on the front roof, and route the antenna wire behind the windshield, thru the gap between A pillar and fender, behind the front door weatherstripping, then thru the gap between the two ends of the door weatherstripping. See photos of my antenna mounting, wire routing, and receiver mounting. The receiver is mounted to a cubby adopter available from Etsy. Bluetooth transmits the audio to the car radio. No tools or dis-assembly required.
