What causes auto start/stop to activate? Sometimes is comes into use, sometimes not, which confuses me. The symbol is usually greyed out except when it kicks in.

Depends on a whole host of things. Coolant temp, outside temp, climate control settings/speed, battery voltage, etc. A combination of these needs to fall into an acceptable range for the auto start-stop to activate.

If you're curious to know, I believe on your dashboard screen or somewhere you can go under vehicle information and there will be a section that says auto start stop, something similar to that and I believe it actually tells you why it's not shutting off.

The reason I'm not saying it with much confidence and I say I believe, or I think is Ichecked it only once and it said working normally. But I believe I read somewhere on these forums that it tells you more than just that.

Good Rule of thumb is to just turn it off.

Running heat or air may disable A.S.S.

AUTO-START-STOP – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why does the engine not always stop when I expect it to?
The system is designed to work in a way that complements other vehicle systems, allowing them to operate at optimum performance.
The system does not stop the engine if:
  • The driver door is open.
  • Your vehicle is at high altitude.
  • The heated windshield is on.
  • The engine is warming up.
  • The outside temperature is too low or too high.
  • The battery charge is low.
  • The battery temperature is outside the optimal operating range.
  • The engine is required to run to maintain interior climate and reduce fogging.
Why does the engine sometimes restart when I do not expect it to?
The system is designed to work in a way that complements other vehicle systems, allowing them to operate at optimum performance.
The system restarts the engine if:
  • You switch the heated windshield on.
  • You switch maximum defrost on.
  • Your vehicle starts to roll downhill in neutral.
  • The engine is required to run to maintain adequate brake system assistance.
  • The engine is required to run to maintain interior climate and reduce fogging.

If you turn on the AutoStart/Stop screen on the dash, it will show the reason it is not working. Outside temperature well below freezing, engine temp too cold (first 2 miles), AC working hard can keep it from working, but the main reason I see is vehicle is charging most of the time, even after long drives, etc. I'm going to have it looked at at the next oil change.
