Auto park if door is opened

Today I went to move my maverick back to my usual spot in the driveway (moved it behind my wifes mini van for Halloween so kids could just come up my side of the driveway).

I back up the Mav then put it in drive and started moving slowly forward. Opened the door while moving to see how close I was to the edge of the driveway and it slammed into park.... Little did I know opening the door while moving automatically puts it in park from drive. I thought it only did that if the key was taken out.. Freaked me out.

Is there a speed limit it auto goes into park if the door opens?

If in drive and open the door it goes into park. If in park and door open, you can put it in drive and move forward. I do it all the time. The warning beep is annoying as sin, but...

I think the only way not to have it go to park with the door open is if you put it in drive while holding the door open. Same applies for reverse.

Ever watch "stupid videos" on YouTube? There are way too many of them showing air heads walking away from their cars, and the cars go sailing away on their own. The auto park thing is just another example of building products to the level of the dumbest consumer. Sort of like putting stickers on batteries warning the buyer to DO NOT DRINK the contents.
The rest of us just unlucky enough to live in their world.

Here is a unique situation... In Boise, on the way to the ski resort (Bogus Basin) we drive across a cattle grate... There is a local legend about a good luck troll that lives there. Not sure how it started, but for decades skiers quickly open and close their doors while crossing the cattle grate to let the Troll in for good luck. You open your doors on the way home to let him out.

Slamming a car in park at 35 mph would be a disaster....

Yeah or if my wife has on a summer dress and it gets stuck in the door. Doesn't realize it and opens the door doing 30+ mph just to get it unstuck. Or my kids open the door (they always have their seatbelts on before we start moving).

Ever since the rotary transmission knob was used in Ford vehicles, this has been the norm (Fusion, Escape, MME, etc). It is stated in the owners manual also

Yes seatbelt was off since I was just moving it in the driveway but my vehicle was not stationary at the time it auto switched into park.

Cannot speak to EVCVT's, but park pawl tests were normal once upon a time. Going 20-25 slip in park. You can hear the park pawl ratcheting until it finally locks speed usually about 2 mph.

I guess it depends on what the car determines is stationary. To that end, I've never had this issue. But I usually don't take my seatbelt off until I put it into park myself, or I move the car with the door open just as I sit in it. So, neither situation applies to the above.

Hate the auto park mode. At drive through yesterday I pulled past speaker so opened door to order. I pressed the gas and when nowhere. Lost 3 places in line till I figured out that my Hybrid wasn’t broken and it auto parked. This is the same place that misgendered my truck as a car, this time my name on order was Den? Not even close to Ted.

I've got relatives that chew tobacco. Opening the door to spit while driving is considered normal............... Might get a little exciting in a Maverick
