KL = Kaiserslautern which is a fairly large US base.
Interesting to see a different perspective of dimensions. In the US the Mav looks fairly small. Over there it looks much bigger as all of the other vehicles are much smaller.

In the 80’s all new Ford cars were developed and tested AND sold in Europe before we ever saw them.

I bought a Taunus not a Tarus.
It had a 1.6 liter 4 banger, Four on the floor, and would do 100 MPH,
160 KPH on the autobahn without breaking a sweat.
Handled just like a BMW 320I

Never made it over here. Because of the Toyota Camry that was simply nicer.

I was stationed there in Kaiserslautern (the name of the city) for four years. There are numerous US military bases in the area (I was at Ramstein, an Air Force Base). In fact, there are over 50,000 Americans living in that area, the largest pocket of Americans living outside the US anywhere in the world. And for all the military personnel stationed there, 100% of the license plates are designated KL.

These were my two KL plates. The military ships one vehicle overseas for you (our behemoth Pacific, we have four kids) and most military members buy a European vehicle for the time they are there (my little VW Golf commuter).

We drove to Amsterdam a couple times (about a 5 hour drive). So very likely that's what you saw, a military member or family visiting Amsterdam!
