All it needs is power, either from one of the USB ports or cigarette plug adapter. Everything else is done through its bluetooth connection with your phone which is in turn connected to the truck.

It's an Amazon Echo device for your car that uses your cellphone for connectivity. Really it's mainly just a microphone with some buttons (mute, active) and indicator lighting that ties into the Alexa app on your phone. It has the advantage that you don't need to run the app as always listening or have your phone out of your pocket.

I got one of the first run batches but it died after a year or so and I replaced it with a ROAV Viva that also works good.

Waste your money, mobile data, and frustrate people. Its a total garbage device, avoid it like the plague. And this is coming from someone that has a Echo in every room of the house.

Will it fit in the cubby next to the 8" display?

Probably (roughly cigarette pack, 2/3 as thick), but better to mount it in a more open area so the microphone can hear over other sounds like the radio.

Why wouldn’t you just use Alexa on your phone? (If you’re cool with Google listening to you constantly). This seems like a duplication of technology.

(edit: I meant Amazon and Jeffrey Bezos, not Google)

It is an Amazon product. So Google listening to you would be a totally different issue.

Auto Echo can be very useful in older cars.

My old Jeep doesn't have much technology -- just a radio with an AUX jack. By plugging Auto Echo into that AUX jack I can answer and make phone calls, have my messages read to me and respond to them, and listen to audiobooks and Spotify.

And I can do all this without plugging my phone into anything every time I get in the car. I keep it in my pocket or set it in a wireless charging phone mount and I'm good to go. It tends to hiccup when my phone drops its wifi connection and switches to cellular data, but at least it adds some tech capabilities to my stone age vehicle.

That said, I hope to replace this with Android Auto in the Maverick (using a wireless dongle).

Sorry I was thinking Amazon, just typed Google while thinking of the phone. I can’t think of any good reasons to have Amazon on and Bezos listening, “oh, gotta order more X right now!”, but as someone outlined above it has some other purposes.

Yeah, I was just being a pain in the butt. I was an early adopter of Amazon Echo Car when it was in beta/first limited release. I used it for a few weeks and then stopped plugging it in. It is still there on my dash, but not being used. For me it was only really helpful as a way to add Bluetooth to my "dumb" car stereo. I had mine plugged into the audio-in jack. So I could tell it to stream me whatever music I wanted from my phone. I guess voice command music is nice. But the novelty wore off for me.
