Adding Key Fob Remote Start

So you are saying that even though my vehicle will come with Perimeter Security, I still have to pay $208 for the Perimeter Security PLUS accessory to get the remote start module, pay to have that accessory installed, AND buy two key fobs @$95. I am now looking at north of $500 to add remote start? At some point, this becomes a totally unreasonable cost/ benefit ratio and it makes more sense to apply that $500+ to buy the Lux package. What is just what Ford Marketing wanted in the first place

You do not have to purchase the Long Range Remote Start Fobs at $95 each, only the VSS harness and module kit. You use your Maverick fob to remote start and to activate the VSS.

This is becoming increasingly confusing. I have read through these instructions. They refer to a remote access upgrade. This upgrade is the FordPass remote start system. This upgrade must be plugged into the Vehicle Start System to work. This is the same VSS module that provides key fob remote start and shock sensors. Therefore, if the Maverick has FordPass remote start, then it must also have the VSS shock sensor + key fob remote start the FordPass remote start plugs into. Therefore there is no need to buy the accessory Security Plus module, and I am back to my original conclusion that I only have to buy two key fobs and program them to work with the VSS already installed in the vehicle. Where is this logic wrong?

The VSS module adds the remote start to the XL using the Maverick fob. You do not need to purchase the Long Range Remote Start fob at $95. Look at my write of the VSS installation to see a test of the VSS Alarm.

Final Security System Install Update: Ford Part # KN1Z19A361A.

Received the correct VSS and the dealer traded out the incorrect one without a problem.

Got home and quickly unplugged the harness from the back of the OBDII port and plugged the male end of the VSS harness into the back of the OBDII port. And, plugged in the harness male into the female of the VSS harness. Plugged the jumper into the VSS Module to enable basic Remote Start feature with the security system.

Programming the VSS was just a few simple steps and took a minute. Same with programming the additional fob.

Checked out the remote start and it works great from anywhere in the house. It activates the HVAC controls after the remote start. It shuts off exactly like it starts.

When the Truck is locked the VSS is activated. I rolled down the driver window and activated the VSS by locking the truck. If you don't buy the optional LED, the only way you know it's activated is by the flash of the parking lights. With the window rolled down, and the VSS activated I pounded on the steering wheel with my fist. The alarm sounded once (horn honk). When I pounded on it repeatedly, the VSS went into alarm mode. Yeah, I guess the neighbors were a little peeved here at our little quiet rural lake community. So, just to make sure they noticed, I re-armed the VSS with he driver's side window rolled down again, reached in and unlocked the driver's side door and opened it from the inside. I'm sure the neighbors were wondering what is the world is he doing. Anyway, the VSS works exactly as it is supposed to.

I probably spent a total of 20 minutes installing the alarm harness, accessories, programming the fobs, allowing the truck and VSS module learn each other, and testing. Super easy install and I couldn't be happier. I probably will buy the optional LED at some point in the future. It's cheap and gives a "tampering while away indication" not possible without it.

Note: Important. There is no reason to purchase the additional Remote Start System Long Range w/ confirmation Key Fob, Ford Part # JS7Z15K601B. At least for me. I didn't buy the long range antenna and the Key Fob provided with the Maverick will remotely start the truck and activate the VSS. Ford did not make it clear you could remote start without the long range fob.

Next up is the factory cruise with XLT, Escape S or SE, or Bronco Sport steering wheel buttons. No timetable for this, but I drove two fairly long trips yesterday and today and I miss cruise.

So, if anyone has a need for a long range remote, just let me know. I paid $95 and will let it go cheap.

It is not just plug and play as this thread shows. I'll post the instructions I used. Yes, it has a lot of information concerning various types of installation, but it's not hard to figure out. Note, I have X'd out the parts that didn't pertain to my XL. I did not print out the Computer Activation through the dealer because it is not required since the XL has remote start activated through Ford Pass, therefore those pages are not X'd out. Pages 13-18 did not apply since it is for the dealer technicians.

Page 9 gives the instruction for the vehicle to learn the VSS module. I went through the process for step #s 24-35 to activate the VSS module.

Page 9 & 10 give functional tests for the VSS, which give peace of mind that the VSS is working properly.

Page 19 gives the instruction for programming the key fob.

Key Start Vehicles:
1 Start with ignition key OFF, doors unlocked and VSS system DISARMED.
2 Open driver door (remaining open throughout).
3 Place shifter in the PARK position (remaining in PARK).
4 Depress and hold the brake pedal.
5 Cycle ignition key ON then OFF 5 times, then back to the ON position a 6th time.
* The horn will sound 3 times to indicate transmitter learn mode access.
6 Press and hold the remote start button for 3 seconds on each fob you wish to program (horn will sound indicating successful programming).
7 Cycle ignition key to the OFF position to exit transmitter learn mode.

The attached instruction includes instruction for the Long Range Remote Start Fob which is an addition purchase. But the Maverick fob that comes with the truck will operate the remote start and activate the VSS. As such, the VSS kit comes with an Owner's Manual that provides more information. For instance:

1. You arm the VSS with the key fob that comes with your Maverick when you lock the vehicle, and obviously disarm the VSS when you unlock the truck.
2. Instructions are given to remote start the truck with your Maverick Key Fob, which they call the Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter (RKE). Again, pretty simple. To remote start with the RKE that came with your truck you:
1. Press lock button
2. Press unlock button (within 3 seconds of pressing lock)
3. Press lock button (within 3 seconds of pressing unlock)

Yep, the truck starts. You can shut it off using the same sequence. It also starts the HVAC to heat or cool the truck while running from the remote start.

I bought the long range transmitter (Remote Start Fob) and do not need it. But to start the truck all you have to do is Press the start button twice, and to shut down you only need to press and hold the start button. The 2-way transmitter that I bought comes with a panic button as well.

Once again, the steps are simple and straight forward and do not require the dealer code anything. At least for the XL, and probably the same for the XLT, but I'm not completely sure. One caution. Read both the instructions and the Owner's Manual to ensure you understand the steps you must use. They are simple but there are many superfluous steps listed.

I don't think so. The instructions indicate the VSS Module has to have the jumper installed to active basic remote start. The instructions also say that the computer has to learn the VSS module. But, I have not tested my thesis since I had the VSS. I'll try to think about unplugging the VSS module and see if the Remote Start Works, next time I'm outside tinkering with my truck.

Yes, you can remote start your truck through Ford Pass on your smart phone.

The alarm will not go off if someone just happens to bump into it, the wind blows, or someone just rocks the truck with their hands, however if glass breaks for another car bump it, the alarm goes off. In my tests I had to hit the steering wheel with my fist pretty hard for it to go off. The alarm lasts for 30 seconds, then pause for 10 seconds, and then continue the monitoring. The alarm will cycle again if danger is continued.

Note, if you don't have an alarm LED (option with VSS) then if there has been an alarm triggered while you are away, when you unlock your truck (disarming the alarm), the horn will honk twice.

Instead of a very sensitive movement sensor, each entry point is monitored entry points are monitored. For instance, to verify this, I rolled the drivers side window down, locked the doors and set the alarm. I reached inside and unlocked the truck and opened the truck from the inside and the alarm goes off. I think the alarm goes off when the hood is opened as well, since the hood latch is monitored.

I unplugged the VSS and tried the remote start to no avail. Plugged the VSS back into the harness and the remote start worked with the Maverick Fob. So yes, you do need the VSS to have remote start capability, but not the stand alone remote start fob. It works with the fob that comes with your Maverick. Hope this helps.

But you did successfully program JS7Z15K601B correct? Because if so I wonder if I could program a key fob with the remote start button built in if it would work. Fob I'm talking about is in a link below.

Yes, both remotes that came with the truck can remote start the XL now and the system has worked flawlessly since. Sometimes too good. It will not overcome operator error for some reason. Anyway everything works ok.

I cannot speak to the fob in your link. Sorry.
