Brand of cars?

Air conditioner compressors are made these days to AUTOMATICALLY cycle the compressor a few turns every startup of the vehicle for lubrication. The owner does not need to remember to do anything. Just use it when they want, shut it all off when they want. You can pass this along to your clients. They'd probably appreciate the peace of mind. I am only familiar with "American" cars, but I suspect all would do this, especially anything branded as "luxury".

Well, I am glad you suspect this. Nothing else actually matters then ;)

Having AC on at all times pulls one or two horsepower from the system. Cruising at 55 mph for example only requires 20 horsepower. Therefore. Air Conditioning could be responsible for 10% of your fuel consumption.

Why run it if you don't need it for cooling or dehumidifying?

West of the Mississippi and North of say, Kansas there's plenty of time you don't need cooling or dehumidifying.

I'm just saying American Auto Makers have you covered in this regard. They planned out and implemented automatic lubrication you and I can't shut off.

If you are saying European cars don't do this simple thing, why not!?

Your reasoning makes no sense.
Just trying to enlighten the readers here.

Fuel mileage loss on modern a/c compressors is negligible. If they had the forethought to cycle the compressor in lieu of you running it, that is for a reason. In that vein, just leave it on if there is little to no impact on mileage. Plus it makes for a more pleasant cabin. I am not going to twist your arm. I am just telling you it is factually accurate that running the a/c is better for the a/c system than not running it. You would argue with a engineer I am quite sure even when not necessary.

You are arguing with a licensed engineer at the moment. You must have a night job as a comedian! It's all good.

Each can do as they wish. Freedom to choose. I choose to save gas, and save wear & tear on the very expensive air conditioning system because I live in a mild climate.
Best of luck.

This is an honest question. At one time it was said use AC vs rolling down windows. The weight of the AC equipment created less of a fuel penalty than disturbing the air flow. I let my Maverick decide what to do. I set it on auto at 70 to 72. One less thing to do.

Depending on aerodynamics of the exact vehicle; usually, somewhere between 55 and 65 mph is the tipping point. Below this speed, windows down saves gasoline. Biggest savings at walking speed, and diminishing returns as you approach 55 or 65 mph. Above 65 mph it is commonly recognized as drag from the windows exceeds the power draw of the Air Conditioner.

The air conditioner can draw up to 3 kW (4 horsepower) but 1.5 kW (2 horsepower is average) and 0.75 kW ( 1 horsepower) at low duty.

And remember, all electricity in the hybrid comes from Gasoline. It does not matter that the A/C does not have a belt on the engine. It's still a parasitic draw.

One reason why I like the power back window. Windows up fan on get a good crossflow.

This isn't true for the Maverick. According to my owner's manual "To keep the system and its components fully functional, switch the air conditioning on and let your vehicle idle at least once per month for a minimum of two minutes."

I had a opened a similar thread about the AC and was instructed to select a blower direction option and not just the fan. I've done that an my AC doesn't come on automatically when starting and doesn't run even when it's off, so far. But if I had it on previously it will.

I want to bring this thread back. I’m having this same problem. I don’t quite understand the proposed solution above.

Just to be clear, I’ve disabled AUTO on my screen. I also disabled AUTO from the remote start setup.

Why does AC keep turning on when I start up the truck? And I’ve noticed about 1/2 the time, the recirculate air button turns on even though I never turned it on. I don’t get the controls of this truck. It seems to just do wherever it wants. Why have controls at all?

Please try pressing and unpressing every single button. Then, in the end, set it how you would like.

It worked for me. In a factory new vehicle, some modes/buttons/cycles/settings have never been "exercised". And when you do this cycle, it breaks the vicious cycle you may be stuck in.

Consider it a stuck key on a keyboard.... the rarely used one that gets unstuck by your pressing the stuck key. You don't know which is stuck, so to be sure of success, you need to press them all.

This "quirk" has worked for more than one owner. Let us know if this exercise worked for you.

I have always recommended to my clients to leave the a/c on at all times. Just regulate the temperature as you wish. A/C on means your are keeping the refrigerant and lubricating oil circulating at all times and that is better for the system long term.
Yup, I like my dual zone auto air.
It’s always on gas mileage be damned.
