Hello all,

I’m looking at doing 360 dash cam coverage and am looking for truck club input. In my current vehicle I am using a BlackVue DR650GW 2 channel dash camera.

While it does a decent job front and rear, several times the cameras did not capture incidents that happened at the side of the vehicle

To change this with my future Maverick, I have purchased 2 BlackVue DR590X2CH32 dash cameras.

I plan to use the two main (front) cameras for front and rear and the two secondary (rear) cameras for driver and passenger side coverage.

So, one 2 channel camera to cover forward and driver side and the second to cover rear and passenger side. I am thinking upper corner of the rear doors toward the front of the vehicle.

Not having my Maverick yet or actually having the opportunity to do anything other than look at one from the outside, I am wondering about the side camera mounting options from current Maverick owners.

Rear camera dimensions: W 67.4 mm (2.55″) x H 25 mm (0.98″) / 20.3 g (0.72 oz)
  1. Has anyone installed dual dash cameras on their Maverick in this way.
2. What would be the optimal
placement for the side cameras?

What kind of real estate is there for the camera on the inside of the front and rear doors. (See above dimensions)

If someone could take some decent pictures of the inside of the front and rear doors it would be appreciated.

Also any other suggestions for mounting i.e. dome light facing out.

Order date of Dec 12 2021, so I don’t anticipate I’ll be doing this until late fall at the earliest but will update how it goes when I do.

I'm currently installing VIOFO T130 3 cam setup in my XLT. Hardwire kit arrives tonight, I'll be using Clavicus' video posted here and on youtube he goes into good detail and includes an extra power run to the dome lights, which you might be interested in for your dome mount. Not sure but from my own placement of the T130, the rearview and large sensor array at the top of the windshield will likely block any visuals from a dome-mounted camera, unless it was hanging down very low into the cabin.

Your side cams idea is solid but placement will be tricky, I'm not sure where you'll be able to place the cameras that will be not-too visible and still provide full coverage. I can get some photos of my rear doors tonight, maybe you can circle out some spots you'd like and if needed I can measure them out.

Passenger rear doors. Really not a great spot unless you're mounting them on the top sill of the door, easy reach for passengers though.

Having run the cabling for a rear cam along the passenger floorboard trim, your best bet would probably be to mount the rear passenger cams along the B pillar, just to the rear/side/up of the front seats. Dremel a small hole for your cable and the 3M should stick to the trim surface well. Keeps out of easy swat reach for children/passengers.

I have Blackvue cameras in my car now and it was hit from the side while parked the other day which got me thinking about doing the 360 camera thing in the Maverick as well.

My idea was to have a bracket made from plexiglass or similar material that mounts under the headliner near the rear side of the b post.

Front passenger door. Same limitations as the rear except you could probably mount your camera along the top trim closest to the hinge. Real close cam for the front passenger and too low for a proper view to me but might be up your alley.

Alternatively, the B pillar offers a lot of empty space to mount, you likely won't need to remove the seatbelt trim depending on the cable Blackvue provides, just feed the wire along the door-side gaps in the trim.

I don't recommend running wires throughout the headliner - talk here on the forums and personal discovery shows the headliner is super tight in the corners and sides, it's doable but I preferred the easy access to the below-door trim and the wires are usually way longer than necessary to run along the windshield headliner, down the passenger A pillar, and around the cabin.

Including photo of B pillar; definitely best spot for an internal rear passenger cam.

Or a literal domestyle 360 camera mounted dead center of the headliner..don't know of any "dashcam" styled plug-n-play ones like that though.

Thanks for such quick input and the pictures. Now that I have had an opportunity to see what the inside of the door looks like, I have a better understanding of placement.

Likely planning to do the camera install on the plastic at the bottom of the window as it will allow me to get the camera as far forward as possible and its not curved like the top of the window. All of the passengers going into my vehicle will be adults so I think they will be reasonably untouched in that location.

Cheers

Let me know about your plexiglass mount. I like the idea of mounting at the top of the door rather than the bottom but the curve seems to limit getting in as tight forward as I'd like. Still curious about mounting from the dome light outwards but likely will get more blindspots further inside of the vehicle than outside.

Regards

I was looking into this too - I'm very impressed by Tesla's various cameras (Wham Baam Teslacam is a cool YouTube channel), especially most people don't know about the side cameras.

There are very few commercial products that I've found - like you said above one solution is running two separate camera systems. Not sure where side mounting would be best though.

If you have the time, ingenuity and most importantly MONEY you could probably do a similar system to Teslacam through the side fascia if you had weatherproof cameras...

Have you looked into a 360 Surround view DVR kit like THIS, I would like to install one of those myself, there are a lot of better options from China. I know that it would require a special cable harness to use with a SYNC 3 system, but it can be done.

Hope someone gives it a try so I can see how well it works. Who know when I will get a Mav.

$140? I wouldn't trust it survive in the hot cabin of a car during the day and still work.. plus only 720p recording? You wouldn't be able to make out anything I'm guessing.

That's why I stated there are much better ones on sites like AliExplress (Asian Amazon) if you look and can wait for the shipping from China. Most will record in 1080p the four video streams, some will record in 4k so each camera is in 1080p.

Received my Maverick on October 26th and installed the cameras pretty much right away.

I finally got around to taking pictures.

2 BlackVue DR590X2CH32 dash cameras.

The main camera/head unit are used for front and rear cameras. I have utilized the “rear” cameras as side cameras to get full coverage.

The retasked “side” cameras are mounted in the bottom front corner of both rear doors. I removed the door panels and ran the camera feed through the rubber wiring guide for a clean installI

I mounted the “rear” camera on the slider which allows for the camera to be centred and when open still maintain a decent rear facing view.

Both cameras are hardwired into a Cellink B battery pack which charges from the fuse panel passenger side and sits under the passenger seat allowing for parking mode.

Wow!

This Blackvue Cam setup to cover all sides is the best I have seen yet.

Front, back and both sides, while still looking discreet from the outside angles.

Very nice.
