I reserved a Slate. It might replace my maverick if I don't change my mind between now and 2027 :)

Since this thread touches on small electric trucks (the Slate), I thought readers might be interested in this newly dropped video by Jay Leno - a huge classic car guru.

Like the 4'x8' long bed as a camping bed feature....but that was about it. Don't care for exposed front wheels/tires. 350 mile range for an EV is impressive...The US has the know-how, just needs to start building a low-cost EV "here". But our federal regulations are a major development barrier.

People who say "we / the grid don't have charging capacity to charge more electric cars" are unaware that there is more than enough grid generating power RIGHT NOW.

Car can be considered an appliance. Just like other appliances you plug in at home. They take more than a TV set and less than whole home air conditioning.

And power use has been flat for a long time. Weird. Look at which states are using the most power per person! NOT California where like 20% of the cars are EV right now!

Most generating station will beg you to use more power and even give discounts to use more power.

Hydrogen is impractical.
You can't reasonably carry enough with you to be useful. Range will always be low. Plus how do you feel about having a 10,000 psi cylinder of explosive gas under your kid's seat? The energy density is low and the pressures are ludicrous. That's why rockets use liquid hydrogen. 1000 times more density. But you need to chill it to -470°F. (About)

Hydrogen fuel tanks in cars use pressures of either 5,000 psi (35 MPa) or 10,000 psi (70 MPa). This high pressure is necessary to store enough hydrogen to provide a sufficient driving range. The lower pressure will supply a compact car for about 180 miles. The higher pressure can supply a compact car for approximately 360 miles.

Then why rolling black outs and brown outs in CA in the summer?

Maybe we Californians are thrifty with our electricity because we are paying 50 cents per kilowatt ....it's terrible ...

I've had solar panels for 15 years so I'm actually immune to the price , but the powers to be are trying really hard to change that ....

California has not had those since 2001.
Lol! 😂

There are typical incident related blackouts from forest fires, high winds, heavy rain or snow. And something new since about 2018 are preemptive "Public Safety Power Shutoffs" ahead of predicted extreme weather events. And there can be random equipment failures, just like any state.

Here are the PEAK DEMAND DAYS by year, rather flat for 3 decades

Here's maximum generating capacity the past few years, roughly 88,000 MW

Of course not all generation sources can be at peak output all of the time. But I hope this illustrates they don't need to be, and that there is quite a bit of "headroom".

The whole reason I purchased the Maverick is that it isn't an EV.
Not that I have a problem with electric vehicles as such but they don't work for me. Where I live (15 miles out of a town of 1500 with 2 chargers) there isn't enough electric supply to the area to support home EV charging.

I could not even make a trip to the closest Walmart without stopping to charge an EV.

Who would use the Slate? City people who don't really need a truck and can have a home charger.

As the Maverick proved, there's definitely a market for vehicles in this price range. That could quickly change if the subsidy goes away. Personally, I'm not interested in anything all electric.

Sounds like it would not work for you....for me an EV has to have a range of at least 150 miles...I just checked GoogleMaps and I have 22 charging stations within 10 miles of my house (Atlanta). Many are sort of hidden in shopping centers, office parks...but some are charging rip-off cost wise. Most of my Targets and Walmart shopping centers have charging stations close by. I travel cross country every year (Atl to Montana, Oregon, etc) and that is why I have a Hybrid Maverick. At least 30-40% of my neighbors have an EV used for mostly going to work (20-30 miles 1 way) and shopping trips.

EV battery technology is getting very close to feasible...with 200-250 + miles in a range.

I don't care what you drive.
But if you can plug in a fridge, you can plug in a car and charge at home. No special equipment is needed to add about 50-60 miles each 12 hours on good old 3 prong 120 volts AC.

Want to charge faster? Some people want to. Few people need to.

99% of homes in the USA will support 240 volts AC charging from an electric dryer socket, or garage welding socket.
This will recharge 300 miles per 12 hour period (25 miles per hour).

May or may not require additional equipment in your home. In mild climates, the clothes washer and dryer is often in the garage, and you can literally plug into the dryer socket.

just sayin' while "not for everyone" it's really not hard to do

Will everyone feel the same if the 240 mile range one the only really viable range one cost 30K?

Before anyone says 150 is enough Its NOT really 150 More like 105 assuming you are a gambler who drives you maverick to E . . Now if that enough great, assuming you don't have a winter. Then more like 85 miles again drive to Empty. . I get nervous at 1/8 a tank in hybrid mav,.

For me no way. BUT it may be plenty for you. I have one vehicle not several.
