Ford offers nine colors for the 25 MY: - Seven colors at no additional cost. Two of these are metallic: Carbonized Gray and Space White
-One, Ruby Red Metallic Clear Coat at an additional cost of $390.
-One, Azure Gray Metallic Tri-Coat at an additional cost of $495.

I know little about paint. I recently bought a RR, Ruby Red. Compared to the two models with metallic, it appears I paid $390 for a layer of clear coat.
Then we get to Tri-Coat. Is the "third" coat another layer of clear coat or something different? If it is clear coat, the first layer of clear coat cost $390 and for another layer the cost was $105. I like the RR and it does shine! I am NOT complaining but $390 seems high for a layer of clear coat. Of course, I really have no idea on the quality of this layer of clear coat........... It may be of good quality and a good value.

I also realize after several Toyotas that you end buying Toyoguard at about $700 and it is, hopefully, just sprayed on by the local dealer. Package includes oil changes and tire rotation which in the case of Ford is covered by your points.

Not really knowing the quality of this clear coat on my RR Mav. or much of anything about it, my question is should I even consider using a clay bar/sponge and/or applying a ceramic coat product? Perhaps just a wax? I think I am going hands off and just watch the paint and surface over time for loss of luster or seeing the film layer get grungy.

I am not really stressing out about this!!! Stay Safe!

All the Colors Have Clear Coat. But IIRC Red is one of the most expensive colors to buy.

Thanks for the info. Wonder why Ford calls it RR with clear coat but doesn't use that term with the other colors??
Sales pitch perhaps!!
So then, what is the Azure Gray Tri-Coat................... Hmm, I am confused but that it not that uncommon....:)

I once owned a car with factory tricoat paint and it was very expensive and hard to match if doing any paint repairs. Never again. :)

There's bascially a tint coat with the metallic that makes the paint look really deep.

In regard to your question about maintenance, yes you can use the clay bar and all of the other normal cleaning methods. Same goes for the coatings or wax. Keep up with the maintenance and that paint will look awesome for a LONG time!

Having done a bit of painting my experiences have been that a tri-coat is usually a base color coat that can also have a metallic. The second coat will usually have a pearlescent, candy or other similar effect mixed with a clear coat. The third will be another clear coat.

This is why it is very expensive and quite difficult to match 100%.

I just got Hot Pepper LONE back from the body shop and there was an up-charge for the paint. I've also been scouting the local Ford lots and looking at Bronco Sports. Most of the "interesting" colors have up-charges. I foresee a time when cars/trucks will be delivered in primer and you'll be making your own paint arrangements.
