August 1969 Motor Trend article:
Maverick V-8 On The Loose
Apparently a So Cal Ford dealer, Chuck Foulger decided to drop a BOSS 302 in a innocent looking Maverick. What could have been…….. Probably with a little tuning and some TIRES, it would have embarrassed many a muscle car! Low 14’s from an unmodified car in 69 was getting it on. I have an extensive magazine collection 🤨 much to my wife’s joy😉

My older brother had a 1971 Maverick Grabber with the 302 c.u. engine. Blue like my Maverick truck and I named my truck 'Grabber' in honor of him and his first new car he ever bought.

I hope you enjoy Grabber for a long time.

They were also rev limited. Amazing how the Ford 302 and Chevy 302 were both rated at 290 hp:unsure:
6150 RPM..... We know which Corporate 302's were stronger, LOL

My Limiter is in place but is internally disabled.

I always enjoy the foundry's spelling error on the car's factory Buddy Bar intake, "Fireing Order" LOL

Turns out quite a lot of the Mustang running gear of that era could bolt right onto the Maverick… disc brakes, knuckles, rear ends…. as well as engines and transmissions. It was fairly easy to create a sleeper Maverick.

I also remember a Peterson article of the day where someone milled the ends of the 200 I-6 intake manifold (integral to the head), adding two more carbs to get a three barrel configuration. Fun times!

I have a Z/28 with the 302. Have had it up to 8k rpm. But factory rated at 290 actual was much more.

I knew a guy that had a faded red 68 Z28 with 3.73’s and some headers. He was persuaded to take it to Alamo Dragway one Saturday, car ran high 13’s. We were shocked, not sure what rpm he was shifting at.
Another guy I knew pretty well had 66 Mustang with a Boss in it. It was almost stock except for the cam, headers and carburetor. Had 5 something gears and a 4 speed, it ran low 11’s at over 120. He would rev it to the moon!

Gotta love the ingenuity in the 70s, all those guys turning those fuel crisis cars into hot rods. Mavericks, Vegas, Darts, cramming in the biggest motor they could find LOL

I LOVE all those old pro stock cars they ran in that era too, Dyno Don and his Maverick. Remember Jungle Jim and his Vega 🤣

Another of mine LOL, a Concours-like restoration of a significant very early 428 CJ, one of the very first 1968.5 428CJ Mustangs available to the public (non-135 car). It was ordered as a race car with what was thought to be the quickest combination, zero option, radio delete fastback, factory 4 speed, 430 rear car. LOTS of HP left on the table due to retaining the historical significance, , stock CJ block, heads, 100lb cast iron intake, single point distributor, yellow top coil, stock factory Holley 735, I even asked Barry to make the dyno pulls through the super-restrictive factory exhaust manifolds. Absolutely meticulous clearancing and assembly by the Master, but somewhat weak by today's standards. Not sure what's up with the color in the video, the motor is the correct Corporate Blue....

Sure do miss my old Maverick. Selling it got me here to Maui, where I met my wife and together we were able to buy the Hot Pepper Red Tremor I'm sitting in right now. It's a good replacement for my high strung Burnt Orange and Flat Black 306/C4 "Shelby" Maverick. Sure it could probably hit 150mph but only seconds before it would murder me as punishment. I even used it to move once. Had 330lbs of weights half the tools in my garage in it and barbell running from the front to back seat. It got me a couple girlfriends but one was a cheat and the other was gonna be a hassle. I used to run it about as hard as the Duke boys but I could tell that wasn't gonna last very long. Right now while my wife is at work, I got 2 propane tanks 17 gallons of drinking water, laundry for us and my mother in-law, 2 medium sized dogs with more room than they ever had before, room for groceries still, an open seat for a hitchhiker(since my wife is working today) , and ice cold AC. It's got similar power on the bottom end and will definitely hold up better racing the dirt roads(if you think the modern one was built cheap:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:).

I do miss that old Maverick, but the similar dash in my new one makes me miss it a little less as I appreciate this Maverick even more.

A side note the 306 short block in my old Maverick was built by Ohio George Montgomery. He used to have a 427 in his Maverick.

Don had a 4 door Maverick, wasn’t it called the Tiajuana Taxi?

That is so wicked! We shook down a new high speed dyno in the 90’s with a Busch series 351 from Yates. It made 700 hp @ 8,000 rpm, both the limit of the dyno. It was so friggen loud but sounded so sweet you couldn’t stand to cover your ears!
What a beautiful car you must have.
