12V battery concerns and its affect on electric mode

I own a 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid and have been noticing a few issues that seem tied to the 12V battery, which I know is under recall for some vehicles. While I haven’t experienced a complete failure, I’m seeing some concerning symptoms:


Symptoms I’m Experiencing:

• The interior dome lights are inconsistent – sometimes they turn on when I open the door, and sometimes they don’t
• I’ve received the “Deep Sleep Mode” notification multiple times
• After long drives, the issues seem to go away temporarily, but they come back again after a day or two
• I’ve disabled Wi-Fi and the FordPass app based on suggestions from other users, but the problem persists
• So far, the car starts fine, but I’m worried that could change

My Questions:

1. Can a weak 12V battery fail without much warning and leave me stranded?
2. Does a weak 12V battery affect the fuel economy or the electric driving mode of the hybrid system?
3. If my VIN is part of the recall, will Ford replace the 12V battery proactively based on these symptoms, or do I have to wait for it to fully fail?

Would really appreciate any insight or shared experiences. I want to know if I should push to get this addressed now or just monitor it for a bit longer.

1. Yes a weak 12v battery can leave you stranded, just like any other vehicle. The hybrid system needs the 12v battery to run the computers that operate it, thus the vehicle will not start with a dead 12v battery.
2. It could, if the system is trying to charge the battery from a low charge level it may draw more power from the hybrid battery than it would otherwise.
3. There is no recall on the 12v battery in any year of Hybrid Maverick. At this time the only 12v battery recall is on a select number of 2.0L EcoBoost Mavericks.

Look up SSM 53087. My Mav was dead one morning after many Deep Sleeps. My servicing dealer tested and then replaced my 12V battery under warranty.

Alot of us have the same issues. I would recommend that you get a jump starter battery and keep it in the truck.

I bought my 2023 Hybrid Maverick new 17 months ago. It has almost 9,000 miles on it. The original battery lasted several months though I always had problems such as intelilocks not working, dome lights not working, blue tooth not working, etc. The second battery lasted several months even less time. I'm on the third battery now. The voltage reads about 12.2V before I start the vehicle, which is less than it should. I will be taking it in again before too long, I'm sure. The dealer did tell me Ford Engineers are working on the problem and only certain Hybrids are affected.

I’ve owned 2 lariat hybrids. 22 and 24. I dropped a $140 AGM battery in both and it solved the deep sleep and lack of app starting which I need in Phoenix to cool my truck. My dealer wouldn’t replace the battery because it wasn’t recalled yet and he fully admitted that the non-AGM batteries they used up until 2024 were inadequate and got drained by the hybrids many calls to it even when you weren’t around the vehicle to check vehicle parameters of the hybrid system. Batteries only lasted about a year and a half to two years in Arizona. I’ll probably get another free AGM battery when this one burns out so I didn’t mind doing it no more headache.

My 2022 battery has been 12.2v for 3 years and 36,000 miles!!!

I still have dome lights. It always starts. And zero warning lights or messages.

Is it difficult to switch out the current battery to an AGM one

Not really there is a retraining clip that you’re gonna need an extender on your ratchet to take the nut out. There’s also a drain tube. You have to route I guess it depends on how handy you are. It might be a little tougher and require more finger scraping than under the hood batteries. I had no problem. Places like Pep Boys will do it for you if you buy the battery from them.

If you confirm to get the same size H4 - no.
Long extension, magnet for holddown piece, wrenches. Normal stuff.
