Just wrapped up the first camping trip with my new OVS HD Nomadic 3 RTT mounted on Loadd Lo-rackk bed racks.
With this setup I've still got most of the normal visibility out the rear window, only losing a few inches out the top. Road manners are basically unchanged. I can only detect noise from the tent if a crosswind is really howling, and I still get over 30 mpg with my 2.0 EB on the highway. Hard to say if there's even a detectable mpg impact. In any case, having the tent setup on the racks, vs storing a tent and cots in the bed was a game changer, freeing up a ton of room for other supplies. Packing up for the trip was MUCH easier as a result of having adequate room for storage.
Setting up the tent is pretty easy with most of the time spent on rolling/zipping/propping up windows and screens. It's nice to have so many options based on the prevailing weather conditions. It rained for about an hour one day and kept us perfectly dry while we watched the rain drops collect on the clear plastic window in the rain fly. The 3" thick mattress that comes with the tent is very comfortable, and the size was adequate to squeeze two adults, 3 young kids, and a dog together at night. Definitely tight quarters for that many bodies and certainly more than recommended, but we're all pretty skinny and like each other well enough. The extra body heat also was nice on chilly nights.
We also setup the matching annex on this trip to have more room for storage, dirty shoes, changing clothes, keeping supplies out of the weather, and to have a nice area in the shade during midday when there is no other shade to be found in the desert. Setup was pretty easy and especially with the 3 kids we found the extra space to be worth the effort.
Overall we all enjoyed the RTT setup. It was very comfortable as a place to relax during the day with very good ventilation to keep the temperature comfortable. Being able to see the stars at night through the plastic window on the rain fly was a really nice bonus. Going to keep the tent mounted most of the summer so we can quickly transition to adventure mode for more memory-making trips!
