Is there a way to tell when the fob battery is getting low, like some kind of warning, or does it just stop working?

You will also usually notice a reduction in effective transmit distance before it completely goes.

I had an interesting experience with this. My 2020 Escape and my 2023 Mav had a "key battery low " message in the instrument cluster at the same time. I tried the spare key in both vehicles and it said the same thing. I took out and tested the batteries in the Mav fob and they were both 3.6 volts. In the Escape fob, one was 3.6V and the other 3V, so I replaced that one, tried all the FOB's, and low and behold, no more low battery messages. I'm guessing the Mav just wanted to get the attention the Escape was getting..lol

One thing for sure, the fobs that came with my truck have strong transmitters. Mine work from almost a block away!

How / where is emergency key placed/used to manually START 2024 Mav Lariat FWD Hybrid when FOB portion is not working or is lost?

To start your vehicle with a dead key fob battery, you can use the backup position for the passive key. Here are the steps to follow:

Insert the passive key into the backup position, which is typically located in the center console or near the push button ignition switch.
Fully press the brake pedal.
Press the push button ignition switch to start the engine.
If the system does not detect a valid passive key, a warning message will display in the instrument cluster. Ensure that the key is properly positioned in the backup slot.[6]

If you lose your key fob it's just like losing your key it's gone you're not going to start your truck without a fob.

What I'm going to try and help you with is if your key fobs battery is dead.
Go to your truck open your center console clean everything out if there's a liner that has to come out. Take it out and please take a picture of what you see. Please post the picture and we'll go from there.

To start a Ford Maverick Lariat with the emergency key, you need to access the dedicated key slot usually located inside the center console, insert the emergency key blade from your key fob, put your foot on the brake pedal, and then press the start/stop button to start the vehicle; essentially bypassing the keyless entry functionality when your primary key fob battery is dead or not detected.
It should look like this when the felt liner is picked up.
