I, for one, have had enough of trying to do short highway merges with an underpowered car. Almost got me killed a couple of times. I want enough power to leap off the line and merge going faster than traffic.

If they made a hybrid AWD with more torque and a better 0-60 time than the ecoboost I'd get that.
Hummm… I never had a problem merging in my Camry Hybrid or Optima hybrid… I will be interested to see actual side by side performance between the 2 trucks…

I live in the San Francisco Bay area. Gas prices are higher here than most of the nation. We also have a lot of stop and go. This truck makes sense here.
Ugh- you seeing $5 for 87 yet? We are

I was looking at other hybrids because I am not willing to take a step back on mileage (gas is $5 a gallon here). None of them are perfect for what I need (2 dogs and camping gear), and all of them are stupid expensive. Then here comes Ford with your dogs go here, your gear goes there and we are gonna give you 37 combined. I won’t get that as my commute is all freeway…but if I get 34 I am ahead, for reasonable money…and my dogs and gear are gonna fit.
I guess at the end of the day, as a scientist, it is all about that mileage and impact. I didn’t have kids but I sure would like yours to wake up to something like what I had as a kid.

Why so much interest in the hybrid? Just curious. Lower hp. Is mpg difference that important to many? Or is it cost?
Because it's a work truck and it has plenty of power for what I need it to do.

And because I have a sports car with 435 ponies at my disposal.

I’ve read most of the responses and still not completely sure which would be best for me. I’m really wanting the Maverick for its practicality and of course, mileage. I’m leaning towards Hybrid because of, again, mileage. At the same time, my daily commute is 80 miles with most of it on highway going 70-80 MPH. So am I really saving much with Hybrid or should I go with the EcoBoost at the right price, especially if there will be some at a local dealership within the next 2 weeks?
I don’t really need towing or AWD here in Florida, but I’m also being really impatient lol. I just don’t want to make the wrong decision and in 2+ years kick myself for not waiting for a Hybrid.

For me, its about the inevitable of more EV and also I listened to the videos of the turbos and I hate the sound of the engine. Too noisy.
maybe outside, not at idle and certainly quiet inside.

As a response to your lead question, It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it, so GO EcoBoost! As for mileage, anybody that has more highway driving than local would be much better off with the turbo. At higher speeds, which is more common these days, it will do better than the hybrid.

The 160 hp atkinson is plenty for cruising even at 80mph, it should still do much better than the ecoboost.

I choose the hybrid over the turbo engine. First off, the eco boost 2.0 is a great engine and has/will pair well with the Maverick. I’m buying the hybrid because this will be my commuter car with the added benefit of having truck attributes when needed. Prior to this vehicle being introduced, I was looking as a Fusion hybrid or Camry Hybrid as my commuter. ( and keeping my 11 year old Ranger for suburban hauling duties). The Maverick hybrid allows great mpg for commuting and an open bed for the dirty stuff. Now I’ll sell the Ranger ( for a premium in this insane used car market) and pair down to one car to fit my needs.

As an aside, driving a hybrid is generally a calming experience ( relatively quiet, smooth torque from-the electric motor from stoplight to stoplight)is an added benefit for commuting.

I originally ordered a Hybrid but with all the things making wait times so long I switched to the 2.0 because I sold my 5 year old truck to buy this and my 2nd car is old and was afraid it wouldn't last and the 2.0 s Would be faster to get. Picked up my Maverick a week ago and my dealer told me the Hybrids could take till April. So all in all I'm happy with it getting over 27 mpg in town in the suburbs plus still don't know if I'd have been happy with 2WD. Winters have been rough here.
NOt a bad move. I ordered a hybrid and am trying to get by with my old SUV - if I come upon some $1500+ repair that I need to make then I'd likely just say forget it and go looking for a 2.0 at the dealer - would rather put the $ into the new ride and get it on the spot (assuming there are some available...) and take on the decrease in gas mileage vs the hybrid...dealer has 0 problem with taking my ordered hybrid...whever that would eventually show up. Yeah, some times you just have to strategize - ordering and having to wait does definitly have its drawback but some plusses too....

MPG and reliability. Nobody knows where gas prices will go. I started driving during the first gas shortage in the 70's. Gas prices may stay relatively low or they could catch up with the rest of the world.

As for towing, 2k would be fine for me. I don't have any large boats anymore and I could get by with that limit. Would more be nice? Sure, but I don't need it and I'm guessing lots of other folks don't either.

Finally, I don't trust turbos. Long term reliability, say over 100K miles or ten years I think you push your luck. And on most motors they are buried deep so its not a DIY job to replace them.
Agree about the turbo. When I bought my 2018 Escape, I purposely bought the base S model with the port injected Mazda-designed 2.5L motor because I did not want a turbo. I've always shied away from turbos. Could only get it in FWD with the non-turbo motor though. Have to be honest I almost decided not to order a Maverick for the very reason it has a turbo engine. I wanted AWD though so that was the only engine choice. I've heard both good and bad things about the 2.0L motor. They had coolant problems but they re-designed the head. The worst thing about the motor is that it is direct injected and has the valve deposit issue. Other automakers have added port injection to thier direct injection engines to keep the valves clean. Ford I guess didn't want to invest the $$$ to add port injection to the 2.0L . I still don't know if I made the right decision to get the turbo motor. All I can say is I still see a lot of the 2013 -2019 Escapes on the road with the 2.0L engine. The Hyundai Santa Cruz offers the 191 hp 2.5L non-turbo port and direct injected motor. Wish Ford would have gone the same route. I would have taken the HP loss to have a non-turbo motor.

My experiences include driving an underpowered early '90s subaru wagon with a bad carburator. Since then I want all the power.

The closest thing to the Hybrid engine is the Ford Escape. I travel a lot and several yrs ago rented an Escape Hybrid. Holly Moley !!! Unbelievable 0-60 mph were near amazing...I hope the Maverick Hybrid is comparable and no reason it should not be. Once the Hybrid reaches 60+ mph freeway speeds it will be much more fuel efficient on the 2.5 L ICE than a 2.0 Eco.

I first ordered the Eco-Boost AWD but after seeing the you-tube video on this site of the Eco-boost AWD I changed my order to a FWD Hybrid. I feel the AWD is only slightly better off-road than the hybrid. If it was 4 wheel drive I'd have stayed with the Eco-boost, but AWD ain't 4x4.

They hybrid makes it's bones in stop and go city driving. Highway efficiency isn't as big a difference because you aren't utilizing the regenerative braking as much. The hybrid power train is also optimized for fuel efficiency so it will be better regardless. The other issue is the drive ratio. If you have AWD or a tow pack it has a higher drive ratio for better low end torque. This gives it better towing capacity and makes it faster off the line when empty. The other side of this equation is higher engine RPMs at a given speed resulting in lower fuel economy.

Everything depends on your priorities.

You should find a few dealer orders showing up but they go fast even at a mark up.

If I were you i'd record mileage divided by time and I'd bet you are probably averaging 35-45 miles an hour during a commute of city/hwy miles. If less than 50 mph is the case the Maverick Hybrid will be hard to beat. I originally ordered the Eco-boost and had to admit to myself that my off-roading in forest roads, and snow comes once every 2, 3 years and is just not worth the extra $$ version mileage you get from a Hybrid. Plus the Eco-boost is AWD and that is no where near the off-roading capability of 4x4.
