I was pleased to fetch $900 + Shipping (additional $200) for my used BAP Alloys & Michelin Primacy Tires. There was also a $55 AZ sales tax too...
Not pleased to see Ebay get $155 worth of transaction fees on the $900 sale. (the $200 shipping is not part of the sale as that went into Ebay's coffers directly, not my Ebay selling account). So yeah, 17% of the value.

Just wanted to give a real world example for folks thinking of using Ebay to sell large automotive items. I've never seen a transaction fee this large from them. I suppose one has to start reading the flood of messages and emails from them that explain these increased costs. Almost thought of pulling the Auction from Ebay and the Ad from Facebook Market places because It's a bit time consuming fielding the man questions (ad was an entire 6 paragraphs, didn't think there was anything missing to question) and rejecting all of the low offers. I certainly would have pulled the auction had such a high transaction fee been anticipated.

It have been better to sell them locally at a reduced price of $700. This Ebay sales results in $745, but requires they be packaged and shipped. A bit of work for $45 more. Oh well... Not complaining, just posting this as information for folks to help them govern their choices when they go to sell.

I had one tentative buyer legit tell me they were on there way and they really were not. Now it's either buyer does local pick up or nothing. Depending on the item I'll even do the meeting place at my local police station. I sold a complete set of new snow tires on new wheels for 1k and still made profit. I'm sure the guy handing over 1k in $20s on the police video raised some eyebrows.

Even after the fees, IMHO you were lucky to get that much. I can never get anything close to that when selling locally, no matter how new, or how nice the set is.

I agree with you about the charges for shipping. They started that when people sold an item cheap, and charged $100 for shipping which was not included with the selling price. Sell on Craigs list, Nextdoor, or Facebook.

I buy a lot on ebay but quit selling because of those fees, I am simply not going to pay them a percentage on shipping which is out of my control & unreasonable at least through the post office. I don't know how these sellers can sell you a $12 item with free shipping, even with high volume.

The other thing to watch out for are the Shipping Prices... For Ebay, I use Shippo which will search all shipping possibilities and will recommend the cheapest... When I listed the Items I was getting estimates of $47 per wheel at 49lbs 28"x28"x10" ... So, the cost was $200.. When I went to ship today, the cost per wheel was $62... so about $248... so I'm eating an additional $48 in shipping as well...

So yeah... tough to make money with Ebay with transaction fees of 17% and shipping costs that come in 25% higher just a week later... :lipssealed:

Update on the Shipping.... It changed today... Seriously... you have to watch it daily... This morning purchased the Shipping for about $43 a tire... so I'm under the $200 the customer paid.

Sweet spot is getting everything right on Ebay... rim/tire combo weighed in at 49lbs... that's important... you go over 50, everything balloons in price.

Next item is size on Ebay. 28.5 x 28.5 was no issue... but originally I listed the height as 10"... when really even with all of the foam/cardboard protection on front and back and meters and meters of stretch wrap, it was well under 9"... so that makes a difference too.. as that lowered the price a bit.

In the end, I didn't use Shippo (thank goodness their site had an error yesterday, that prevented me from completing the transaction... So I saved about $50 going straight Ebay this morning.

FedEx ended up being the best price for shipping them.

So, I thought I'd follow-up with this transaction, becuase of a dirty Ebay/FedEx trick pulled today, more than 3 weeks after shipping the wheel/tire combos.

FedEx charged me an additional $32.73 per tire.... They're calling it a 'Cost Adjustment'... No explanation given.... I accurately stated the weight and size and it was verified at the time of dropoff to Fedex Handler (they took out a ruler and put each of them on a scale!). So, they hit me up for an additional $130.92...

Just so you know.... you aren't paying what you think you are paying after a transaction is completed with a buyer... It's bad enough Ebay received over $155 for the sale on this transaction.... Then the shipper/ebay got another $310. Of course I had about $20 in shrink wrap and tape too. So yeah, tire/wheel package sales are not economical on Ebay...

Just giving you heads up in the event that you try to use Ebay to resell wheels/tires. To say that I'm angry is an understatement. I intend to fight the charge, but I'm sure I'll loose because, well, I hate everybody today...

The cost adjustment is most likely because the items were not boxed and or not square.
UPS does this too for not boxed and not square items.
Not much you can do.

I used to sell a lot on EBay back in the earlier days. Now it’s just not worth it to me. Especially if retailing.

Facebook market place is just as bad or worse then Ebay when it comes to shipping an item. They charge a fee on the item , tax collected and shipping cost.
I sold a motorcycle wind shield for 60 bucks plus shipping. Facebook transaction 60 item plus 22 shipping plus 5 sales tax = 87 paid by buyer. fee 8.70 net to me 51 dollars. 15 percent to facebook.
never mind packing up an item and driving to the shipping carrier costs.
I sell on Ebay also and between the fees and high shipping cost associated with selling it makes it hard to justify especally when you get seller feed back complaining of the ship cost - which is set by Ebay or Facebook.

I'm sick of ebay fees as well. I sell some of my rc cars on there . Even for that they take to much money . They take from the shipping from it and the tax. Facebook marketplace is ok. I just worry about meeting up with shady people.
