Looking to replace my tires on an FX4 with the tow package. Any suggestions?

Really depends on what your needs are. Now is your chance to make the truck suit you more.

Personally, I am a big fan of Michelin tires - I think they flat out make the best. But if you are looking for an all-out off-road tire you probably won't find what you're looking for there. If you find yourself doing mostly on-road driving and towing with the occasional trip up a gravel road -- the Defender series of tires are hard to beat.

I live in the snow belt and drive on dirt roads a lot. I replaced my Pirelli Scorpions with B F Goodrich KO2s also went up a size to 245/65-17. They lower the speedo about 3%. Waze says 85mph at an indicated 82MPH so minimal effect at lower speeds.

Had both Toyo OC II AT (235/65) and Nitto Nomad Grapplers (245/65) on my FX4/4k when I owned it. Both were great in all weather conditions and had enough capability for light to medium off road use. Plus both were on the lighter side for AT tires so they didn't wreck my MPG, acceleration, etc like a super heavy, full blown AT tire.

All depends on your use case though.

I have the Nitto Nomad Grapplers on my FX4. I drive around Jackson, WY and the Tetons all year with them. FIre roads, gravel, pavement. They are wonderful tires in all environments and weather conditions. They also handle well on pavement and are quiet as well.

I replaced the scorpions with the Nokian Outpost nAT on my FX4. Awesome tire for year round driving in Alaska on and off road.

What kind of driving to you expect to do? What's the weather like in your area? Mostly highway with enough off road for emergencies? Or do you spend every weekend deep in the woods? The stock pirellis are fine if you do mostly on road. I liked them better than I thought I would.

Regarding your 235/70 - I checked out the video. Did you, by chance, go into ForScan and adjust for tire size? I don't think the available range is quite enough for a 235/70, but it could get you closer by adjusting for the 235/65 tire that is on the Tremor models. That would bring your speedometer/odometer error down closer to your actual mileage.

I've just turned over 4000 miles, so I'm not even close to being ready for new tires. And the Perellis seem to be doing just fine for me, though I'm not in a snowy area (usually) and my off road activity has been very limited.

Didn't bother with Forscan as it couldn't adjust it enough but it's only off 1-1.5mph at 70 mph so it's a really small difference. On the plus side the odometer moves slower :)

Why did your respond, this info is useless. Great job with the lame ass Pirellis.

I don't believe Forscan or even FRDS can modify the Maverick tire sizes for anything larger than 2270mm circumference, which is a 225/65-17.

weirdly, some owners report their trucks coming with some other smaller value for circumference. I have no idea why as that size is very near what you get when you do the math (or use an online calc!) for a 225/65-17, nominally. there is some variation in actual tire dimensions, and of course as a tire wears the circumference decreases, which can be significant on a tire with a lot of tread depth like many all-terrain tires.

anyway, back to the 2270 max in the BCM. that's really odd because a 225/60-18 is nominally 2283mm, nearly the same but not smaller, and a Tremor's 235/65-17 is 2314mm. numerous people have reported when they look in Forscan they see a circumference smaller than the max of 2270.

I don't know why Ford would do that, but I can offer these observations.

Generally, reading high is better than low so that you don't break the speed limit unknowingly. Also, reading high gives better mpg by that amount. But these amounts are tiny, around 1-2% error.

back to recommendations-

I would use a 235/65-17 if you want minimal speed error and have stock ride height (or are lowered but I doubt that is any interest). you can get the 235/65-17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W that the Tremor uses on clearance for $161 at the TireRack and similar prices at other stores; I bought a set for this winter but haven't used them yet. you also might be able to find a set of these that someone with a Tremor removed early in favor of a larger tire.

If you aren't lowering or you're lifting, 245/65-17 is a popular size. it's only 3.5% speed error. I don't have a specific recommendation on tires in that size.
