Potential buyer musings and questions

My wife and I have been debating a Maverick off and on for a while and decided we want to pick one up. Obviously we are late to the game as we are hoping to secure an order for a 2022 model hybrid. We talked to the dealer and obviously they were not optimistic about getting any in for a good long while but did indicate that Ford has not shut down ordering the 2022 just yet. After reading some threads it sounds like we may be waiting until ~Summer before we see our truck (if we get a 2022 at all). The dealership indicated they were approved to lock in the current promotional interest rate of 0/36 month as long as we placed an order for the truck and received a 2022 when it came. If it ended up turning into a 2023 we would likely just have to restart the process.

My questions are asking for predictions unfortunately.
1. Is it worth placing an order for a 2022 model hybrid now or waiting for the 2023 models (my biggest fear is Ford will jump the price ~3k+ due to the demand that they have had)
2. What would you say is the real world difference in gas mileage between the eco boost FWD on the highway vs the hybrid on the highway?
3. Have dealerships typically required a purchase agreement when placing a custom order? My fear is if we sign a purchase agreement they will have us under their thumb when the truck comes in as far as our car's trade in value is concerned.

I really appreciate the help with my questions. The forum has been a great community from what I have read so far!

1. I'd place the order. If your 2022 order rolls to 2023, you may get price protection on it.
2. The highway mileage between a FWD Ecoboost and the Hybrid is only 3mpg. The city mileage is where the big difference is.
3. Most dealers don't require a signed purchase order. They are supposed to be asking for a deposit, though. YOU should require a signed purchase order listing the selling price, and ideally have written on there "This vehicle will be sold at MSRP with no additional markup" and get both yourself and the dealership to sign it. That avoids the nasty surprise that some people are getting when they try to pick up their orders.

Heck order it! Find an ecoboost to buy while you wait if you like it cancel the hybrid if you need better mpg sell or trade in the eco when u get the hybrid in. And definitely get their deal in writing and if require a deposit see if it's refundable at this point I'd think it should be as they are getting a stock unit thanks to you if u cancel

1. I'd put in the order since you'll have a long time to consider these things. It's easier to cancel than it will be to order in the future. Plus, I'd say it's a near certainty that the MY23 Maverick will include a price increase.

2. The hybrid is rated at 10% more efficient on the Hwy. Here's a table outlining the efficiency/potential fuel cost differences between the hybrid and EB FWD:

3. You should sign a DORA, but you can pull out of the deal when the car arrives. The dealer will be more than happy to take your order and sell it off the lot with a couple thousand dollar market adjustment. Trade in is always a crap shoot, and they'll have the upper hand in the negotiation, so it's probably smart to look at other options (e.g., Carvana) when the time comes.

Was supposed to go to the Ford dealership today (11/2) to place my order, but I'm still debating hybrid vs. EcoBoost. I'm a bit nervous on several fronts: this will be my first hybrid, and my first Ford. There is, of course, the cardinal rule of car buying to consider as well: Do you take a risk in buying a first-year vehicle? Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi...you're my only hope.

There is a thread where people are posting their order and delivery dates. Seems like most of the people who got their order did so in 90-120 days. Most seem to be ecoboost as the hybrid has been so delayed. My dealer told me I could wait up to 6 mo for an ecoboost and up to 12 mo for the hybrid.

If you are doing mostly highway driving the hybrid won't benefit you that much unless you go heavy with the AWD towing and FX4 packages which reduce mileage. Lots of stop and go driving is where the hybrid will shine...if you can get one.

I do think there is a risk of Ford jacking up the price for next year. They also may change the way the packages are set up and increase the price of those. Of course, this year you risk the new model blues as all the bugs get worked out, but most of the components are tried and true and hopefully they won't be a problem.

There is also a thread where ford listed the items causing the biggest delays so if you can tailor your build you can hopefully get one sooner rather than later.
