In the past I have always soldered and shrink tubed electrical connections. I have read that crimps are better. Is there a certain type of crimps to use? And or the crimping tool? I have used standard butt splices but they are not sealed against moisture.

You can get shrinking butt connectors, although they often don't have as good of sealer inside and in my experience are a bit prone to splitting if you heat them a little too long.

Otherwise just heatshrink over regular PVC insulated butt connectors or get bare splice connectors if you want slimmer results.

I'm going with the T-taps when I start with electrical mods...unless y'all have had issues with them?

Check out the shrink solder seal crimps. Many oem’s certify these as a best practice repair. Just google those 3 words and you will find them.

Thanks have seen these types in harbor frieght. While I like harbor frieght for tools you may not use alot. Not sure about the quality of those there. Was hoping to find a good brand. Not sure if brands like amp, t&b pandit are still around.

T-taps have a lot of downsides that need to be taken into consideration. I absolutely wouldn't use them for tapping anything that's a variable voltage or signal wire. They need to be sized appropriately for the wire they're tapping or you'll get bad connection or damage the wire's strands. And I'm really not fond of using them anywhere relatively exposed to the elements like the engine compartment, especially on a main wiring harness you can't easily replace because they aren't sealed and create an ingress point for corrosion to spread up/down the wire.

While I have used them not a fan. Work ok in a pinch. Looking for good quality connectors.

If you know how to solder. Solder and heat shrink tubing with sealer in it is the ultimate method of joining or splicing wires. No worries of a poor connection or moisture issues. Coming from an electronics technician that has 40 years of experience who has traced and soldered repaired hundreds of butt splice connections of all types.

Yes I do know how to solder. But all over the internet I have seen that is not desirable in auto wiring because of the vibration. I learned how to solder building scratch built slot cars when I was 8 yo. I never had an issue solder and shrink tubing. Just don't want to miss out on new ideas if they work.

I'm an airframe and powerplant mechanic specializing in helicopters. These are the crimps and crimpers that we use. Slide the sleeve on one wire, using the crimpers, crimp the wires in the splice. Slide the sleeve over the crimped splice. Use a heat gun to heat shrink the sleeve. Immersion resistance and the sleeve also provides strain relief.
Thank you very much! They do look nice the crimp tool is pricey tho. An issue I have is the crappy crimp tools that you see damages the insulation on the splices.

Wago connectors for me. Haven’t had a failure yet.
Those sure are different than standard crimps if I am seeing that right. Have seen them used in home wiring.
