Does tremor use different rear ptu fluid?

The tremors have a different rear unit than the regular mavericks. Do they spec a different fluid?

This may be completely off-base, but my understanding is that the Tremor's rear diff is from the Focus RS, and I found this on a Focus RS forum. Would need to consult with an actual tech to confirm/deny:

"From Ford:
The rear drive unit [FocusRS] stores fluid in three separate chambers.
• Rear drive unit differential housing
• Left clutch pack housing
• Right clutch pack housing
The rear drive unit differential housing is filled with Hypoid oil Ford 75W 85 plus 5% Lubrizol FM6179 to lubricate the differential and to actuate the multi plate clutch packs.
NOTE: The clutch pack hydraulic fluid can not be replaced.
The clutches are wet-running multi-plate clutches with a carbon lining and are immersed in Pentison CMF11S 275 ml hydraulic fluid. Carbon is used on the clutches as it has the best properties in terms of power density and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) performance.
Modulation of the multi-plate clutch locking torque is performed by means of a hydraulic pressure that acts directly on the plate assembly via a piston."

My understanding is that it's the same as the Bronco Sport Badlands.

I found this post, which references the bronco badlands, which has the same liquid cooled PTU

This suggests using Motorcraft SAE 75W-85 Premium Synthetic Hypoid Gear Lubricant

Remove the liquid cooler to drain, fill plug on the passenger side by the CV.


Now, what about the differential?

Which suggests, like your copy/paste, that the clutch packs are sealed and not serviceable. But the PTU itself can be serviced.

You need the ford fluid and also the additive.
From the link, which has a copy from the tech manual:

Requires "Motorcraft Torque Vectoring RDU Gear Oil Additive", p/n XL-19.

Add to Motorcraft SAE 75W-85 Premium Synthetic Hypoid Gear Lubricant

1 qt fluid to 1.86 fl oz of additive.

Manual specifications do not use any additives on the AWD/FWD models. Just get the recommended fluid that already has what it needs in it:

Also, the service manual specifies the plugs to be thrown away - totally unnecessary.

As for the Tremor, I have yet to see anyone quoting a Maverick Tremor manual that specified any difference in fluid changes. The manual I have is for both Hybrids and EB's and no specification is made to changes on Tremors. Can anyone with a Tremor owners manual check to see if fluid specifications are listed in it? Because I have yet to see any posted info on Tremor service manuals, as unfortunately, FORD has a chokehold on all of them charging an arm and a leg when all they had to do was list fluids in the damn owners manual. But again, my service manual makes no specifications to anything Tremor related.

If I had a Tremor, I'd check with the local dealership to confirm what fluid is needed and have them print me out the procedure directly from the manual then repost it here.

The references on this forum probably check out, but again, I still have yet to see anything in writing. Part numbers would be helpful when using comparisons from other vehicles. There are a couple early posts with just awful info on what fluid was used and this is the disconnect it causes. There needs to be a service manual sticky for the Tremors and the other models. I've asked for this multiple times already and gotten no replies. I pushed for the brakes and transmission info to be pushed into a sticky and got those - but nothing on the RDU/PTU.

Best advice I have for you is confirm what the dealership says.

I'm all for doing your own basic maintenance but I personally would skip this one. The gain is very little and the risk of issues with using the wrong fluid, incorrect procedure, etc are fairly high and the cost of replacing the unit is very costly.

Follow the factory service schedule, at least. If it came with insufficient PTU or RDU fluid from the factory and fails under warranty, that's on Ford. Doing it early, and doing it wrong, is going to be an expensive lesson.

75w gear oil is simple enough. but Ford could easily say they have special additives in their motorcraft fluid pn # (blahblahblah) and you didn't use that, and now your RDU is bad.

What are you saving DIY? $50? Is that a) necessary at your current mileage and b) a good risk/reward? (reward $50, risk $2500)

So I spent time with my 2024 owners manual tonight.
I don't see any section on the PTU or RDU at all. There is no information on their fluids, Tremor or not.

What page/section did you find that info in your manual?

Mine doesn't even have a real maintenance schedule in it. It says to go online for one.

When I go to Fordparts and try to shop for chemicals/lubricants the only part listed in my touch up paint. Maybe they don't have anything labeled for 2024 tremors yet?

I don't want to speak for Montana but in the 2022 manual I have it's located in section 205-02 or page 839ish.....
