My dog has a bad habit of stepping on the buttons and changing drive modes, turning various functions on or off, etc.. It's a terrible place to put those buttons and it would be nice to be able to cover them with something that prevented casual contact. I was thinking a plastic cover that slides over the buttons with holes in it so you could still push them. Am I alone in thinking this should be a thing?

There is no aftermarket solution to cover the center console buttons that I'm aware of. With so many pet owners in the US it might not be a bad idea. Perhaps @Muslogy Auto could take a look and if there is enough interest they might come up with something?

Just spitballing here so I don't know if it's possible or not.

No idea how much interest there would be but it could certainly be done, particularly by 3d printing. Unfortunately I have no idea how to do that. It would just be a hollow cover with holes in it over the center of the buttons.

could be prevented by the dog staying secured in a seat. The cover would be an annoyance compared to just reaching down and knowing the button is right and ready
The buttons get accidentally bumped by humans as well.

My first thought is:
What a terrible place to put a dog.

🦮
He's a 70 lb hound mix that has very definite ideas about what he wants to do vs what I want him to do. I've always found that hounds are funny in cars. My first dog was a hound mix that insisted on sitting in my lap when we drove around. If you pulled up next to me it looked like the dog was driving. 🤣

My wife had a dachshund that would sit backwards in the armrest shaking and side eyeing the windshield because it was deathly afraid of the windshield wipers.
I had a black lab that thought she was sneaky (and some times she was) and would move really slowly toward me, and if I didn’t do anything, she would jump in my lap.
dogs are great 🙂

Our hound doesn't know he's 70 lb. His entire purpose in life is to crawl into your lap so he can get belly rubs. Stop rubbing and you get a paw to the face. My theory is that he was a really cute puppy and people used to do that to him when he was little. Then he got big and people stopped letting him on their laps. So what he does is come up to you for pets, then starts leaning against your legs and kind of flops over to expose his belly for rubs. Then he starts pushing up with his hind legs so he slides up into your lap. For belly rubs. And don't you dare stop or you'll get the paw again!

He is one of the sweetest, easiest going dogs we ever had, unless he sees a bunny in which case he becomes the terminator. Wrecked an entire, brand new chain link fence pulling at it with his teeth so he can get out and chase the bunnies.

Did I mention how much he sheds?🤣

Having had a dog take out the windshield in an emergency stop once, I would lean towards those who say secure the dog in the rear seat. Dog was OK but still it could have been much worse.
