It's not about you. And you should read all of this>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The current burst of labor activism, in the auto industry, Hollywood, Amazon warehouses, Starbucks stores and elsewhere, is an attempt to reverse these trends. The United Auto Workers, for example, agreed to large pay cuts for new workers when the industry was near collapse during the financial crisis almost 15 years ago. Since then, Detroit’s Big Three — General Motors, Ford and Chrysler (now owned by Stellantis, a Netherlands-based company) — have recovered, earning large profits, but worker pay has not rebounded so well.

Union leaders are now asking for a 36 percent wage increase over four years, to match the similar recent pay increase for top executives. The union also wants pay to rise automatically with inflation in the future, as it did before the financial crisis. Without such cost-of-living increases, inflation causes de facto pay declines every year.

No, it's not about me. It's about all of us. Can you predict how much a new vehicle from the big three is going to sell for, or NOT sell? Ford supposedly lost billions on the F-150 Lightning. GM had acres and acres of trucks parked because they didn't have all the parts to finish the electronics. What did they do with them? Scrapped them. Brand new, almost finished. Did they make a profit last year? '
Get ready for low cost, junk, Chinese vehicles, or vehicles made elsewhere, but not here.

Just keep your Mavs healthy and out of the Shop - Parts availability could become a huger issue than it already is ..... like keeping a quarter tank of gas in the tank for fuel pump health instead of running it dry to snap a shot of MPG's ;)

Cheers

Ford supposedly lost billions on the F-150 Lightning.
2.5 Billions to be exact for for Ford Model e (EVs), predicted to be 3.0B in 2023... In addition, Ford also wrote off bad investments, namely:

There were a few costly expenses that also put a dent in Ford’s bottom line. The company’s stake in Rivian, which has been steadily shrinking since May 2022, has been costly. Ford reported it took a $7.3 billion write-down on its Rivian investment.

It also wrote down $2.8 billion for its investment in Argo AI, the autonomous vehicle startup that Ford backed in 2017. Argo shut down last fall after Ford and VW, its two investors and customers, pulled their support.

All told, 12.6B loss and yet, Ford had a net income of 10.4B in 2022.

As for GM, it didn't do bad last year:

DETROIT, Jan. 31, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today reported fourth-quarter 2022 revenue of $43.1 billion, net income attributable to stockholders of $2.0 billion and EBIT-adjusted of $3.8 billion.

GM's full-year 2022 revenue was $156.7 billion, net income attributable to stockholders was $9.9 billion and EBIT-adjusted was a record $14.5 billion. Results were at the high-end of the company's revised EBIT-adjusted guidance range.

I won't be crying over anything. I am not going to be buying another new vehicle ever again. I wasn't planning on buying a Maverick until I figured I could get better fuel economy and I could sell two older vehicles. One thing to consider is this; how long does it take to train someone for an assembly line job? Automation already helps with a lot of the heavy lifting, even the heavier tools are suspended from above. What is the average wage and benefits package for a typical UAW member? Do the math.

Okay personal experience with UAW, United Aerospace Workers. There was a gentleman named Joe. An engineer asked him to remove a cover from an inertial navigation unit designed for our military. He said no and picked up the newspaper and went the bathroom.. 2 hours later he returned and still refused the engineer request. The engineer complained to management. He complained to management and Joe was suspended for a week. Joe came back to work with back pay for his suspension. This was his fifth time doing this. I tried to intervene and help get the problem solved. I was told no, it’s Joes work center.
WTF our troops lives on line and this premodona just wants a paycheck and free time off…at that point the union I joined was worthless as a veteran…

Make your own decisions…

Look if you are so concerned with what this raise will add to the cost of a vehicle, we can do the math: 21% is the total labor cost(10% - wages; 11% - benefits) of a new vehicle. so if the truck cost 40,000 (Lariat) then the labor part is 4000. Times a 10% raise is 400. So the new Lariat should cost 40,400.00. This would only apply to new trucks/cars sold after the deal. If you have a XL near the 20K cost your increase would be about half that. This would go up every year as long as the labor contract is in place. I'm reasonably sure if you offered a 32% raise, 8% a year and a cola every other year most people in the unions would consider that workable. So the increases would be a little less. You'll not get a 32 hr work week until labor shortages lessen.

I purchased a Honda Civic Type R in 2020 under the same circumstances. Very difficult to find anywhere and most people were paying ADMs of 3-10K over MSRP. I paid MSRP, but I had put my money down a year before and the dealer was honest. If you look at the cost of the car over the years it follows the same pattern. What used to cost 34K OTD was 39K three years later. The demand was so high for the car that two years and 20K miles later I was offered over what I paid. None of that is true any longer as demand has slackened a bit for the car.

So all I'm saying is that we are all responsible along with the manufacturers for creating a demand that modern "sleek" corporations can't meet. So we can't complain too much when we are part of the problem. We all, I hope, are behind workers, who are just trying to raise a family like all of us.

Where I come from shows what others are trying to say about the prevailing wage rate. We have a thriving manufacturing industry here (toilet paper, toweling, etc). My family worked in the mills through 3 generations. They were mostly union plants and the some of the most successful of their industry. I chose to work in a different type of manufacturing plant but benefitted from the prevailing area wages. As does everyone else to this day as some plants are still unionized and others are not but all are looking for the best and brightest workers.

Unless the union is incompetent. The workers at Hostess striked the company into closure.
Just seen that Hostess was just sold to JM Smucker the jelly people. Think that's the second time sold since they went under.

BS.
Net revenues for 2022 totaled $191.4 billion (179.6 billion euro), up 18% from a year ago. Adjusted operating income was up 29% to $24.8 billion (23.3 billion euro). All regions also saw positive results. Stellantis also reported second-half results for 2022. On top of that, these companies stopped benefits for workers during the pandemic. Time to pay yp..I am sure they can afford the %20 that is being asked or negotiate, unlike the Captains of the Hollywood industries.

What is the average wage and benefits package for a typical UAW member?
Based on the US Department of Labor data, the average wage is $28.47/hr as of July, 2023. Based on the US DoL data, since 2020 the average wage increase had been roughly 27% in four years. Just keep in mind, that the average wage fluctuates per month, depending on the level of employment and the type of employment. A temporary worker starts out @ $17.00/hr, while the top-level assembly workers make $32.32/hr. The full time employees received $9,716.00 profit sharing check for year 2022. No profit sharing for temporary workers, not much benefit package either. Basically, it is a two-tier system as far as type of employment is concerned. The UAW does want to bring the temporary employees salary and benefit level to the same as the full time employees.

If you'd want to know the UAW workers benefits package, research it in the 540 pages of the expired 2020 UAW contract, it's all in there. I am not going to do that....

An interesting financial summary for the three car manufacturers, for the last three years, released by the UAW:

Ford Maverick Teamsters will honor UAW strike (No Deliveries) ua

The numbers looks about right, albeit labor cost per vehicle is somewhat surprising.

When it comes to statistics, just keep this in mind:

Numbers don't lie, people with numbers on the other hand do...
