I think the faded emblem on my 2001 Ranger looks like it has the blackout treatment. Can't say the same for the headlights. LOL

The ones I've seen are totally white, but just on one side of the vehicle. Sometimes in the back, others in the front.

I suppose it depends on which one was parked towards the South the most.

I have been pretty consistent in avoiding sun on the front to protect the headlights, maybe the blackening of the emblem is just from the passage of time.

I'd be surprised if the silver stuff in the logo had any actual chromium in it. It's probably mylar or something.
That’s what Tribar makes, and what they would be using hexavalent chromium for. Emblems, grills, etc

https://www.tribar.com/products/

There were shortages of some of those parts due to the plant shutdown resulting from the improper discharge.

Wow, that's interesting. They use actual chromium to make shiny silver plastic parts? You'd think there would be something else. I thought they only used actual chromium on metal parts. Learn something new every day, thanks for the link.

No. You can't apply chrome to plastics. It is a process called vacuum metallizing. Usually aluminum. Basically the same process as car makers now use PVD for. It looks like chrome but isn't.

This is the answer, back in the 90s when I was working as an auto tech before going to college we used to have a ton of customers come in to have their "chrome" plastic emblems change to "gold" color using a portable electroplating system. There's no chromium involved like there was for old school real chrome plating.

That's what I thought, but the link he posted has pics of ford emblems like on the front and rear of the mav. I find it hard to believe they would use actual metal in there when they could use metallized plastic which should be far cheaper and easier to produce.

Yes, it probably is just vinyl sheet under there.

I grew up in a Chrome shop. The amount of people who brought in plastic parts to "chrome" like vents and emblems was petty frequent. We had to tell them those are not chromed, but a different process.

On automobiles and bicycles, I believe chrome was originally used to ward off rust, as a preservative so to speak. If they didn't, or couldn’t paint it, they chromed it.

It wasn’t until a few decades later that it used as a purely decorative coating. Old chrome looks different than the gooey, “inches thick” show chrome seen today.

And yes, plastic isn’t chromed. That’s why you can brush it with a soft abrasive pad and make it look like stainless. Chrome would be much too hard.

My fender badge shows the brushed technique.
