Dealer says I can use any brand full synthetic oil for my Maverick

I have had my Maverick for 3 weeks. My dealer recommends changing the oil at 6 months since I put few miles on it. They say I must use a Motorcraft filter but I am free to use any full synthetic oil, Costco, Walmart, Mobile 1, etc. They say use of any of these oils will not void my warranty. I have read conflicting opinions on this here.

Conflicting opinions? Surely not! What your Dealer says about the Motorcraft filter is false. By law a manufacturer cannot force you to use their maintenance products unless they provide them free of charge. But I would always recommend a Motorcraft filter as you KNOW if fits the standards for your Maverick. There are other filters that will work just as well, but you cannot go wrong with the Motorcraft.
Oil...opinions are mostly just that and NOTHING more.
So, if worried about the correct oil, all you have to do if find an oil in the correct viscosity that meets the Ford Oil specifcations listed in your owners manual. Usually that number starts with "WS" as I recall.

I have used whatever as both oil and filter on vehicles and have never had the engine be the point of failure. My advice on oil changes to maximize engine life: do them.

Your dealer is wrong about both the filter and the oil. You MUST use Ford approved filter and oil during the warranty period. If you are not buying them from the dealer then you better keep detailed records and receipt in case of engine related failures.

The conflict is in the duration, and I agree with your dealer. 6 months to a year max if you drive less than let's say 10k per year. They are correct there and most will agree that anywhere from 6 months to a year is on par. I personally do 6 months because it ends up being around 3-5k for my EcoBoost. I'd do it the same for the Hybrid and did previously when I had that setup in an Escape.

But they are wrong about brands. You need to make sure your brand is within spec. You can't just grab any 0w-20 and call it good. And the oil filter having to be MotorCraft? Totally false. You do not need to use a MotorCraft filter.

I will have to ask you about WHY they stated that though. Do you have an extended warranty through them? I know most states protect the consumer, but there exists the possibility of stipulations in their fine print if so. Not likely though as most states have laws against it.

You have a hybrid. There are what, no more than 60,00 hybrids in use in America? Ever seen the "plate" (for lack of a more technical term) that has to be removed before an oil change? There are about 50,000 little screws to be removed then replaced when done.

I wouldn't trust that to the dudes working at random oil change places. Even the new, inexperienced techs at Ford will hopefully have done enough to get it right. On this one, I say stick with Ford, the pricing is close enough to make it worthwhile in the long run.

Can I ask how many miles you put on? Twice a year is not a bad idea if you never run it fully warmed up for a decent length of time or you live in a climate where you can get a lot of condensation in the crankcase.

IMO car manufacturers require oil brands to license their specific quality or standard of motor oil. I will play that game until the warranty is up. I will also stay with the manufacturers filter, then switch to my preferred brands.

For the hybrid, the owner's manual (page 369) engine oil needs to meet specification WSS-M2C962-A1. Page 366 of the owner's manual states "If a Motorcraft oil filter is not available, use an oil filter that aligns to SAE/USCAR – 36 Performance Specifications. Filter Type B.

Who knows why dealers day anything. They insisted on the Motorcraft filter but were ok on any brand 0-20W full synthetic and said nothing about meeting Ford specs. I opted out of the extended warranty and only learned later that out of California warranty sellers like Granger cannot sell to me though there are ways around it.

Ford has not created their own specific licensed "spec" for oils like GM has with the Dexos license. WSS-M2C961-A1 aligns with API SP/GL-6A. As long as it meets those, it's within spec.

EDIT: just saw yours is a Hybrid. different Ford #, same most recent specs, just different weight/blend.

I have had my Maverick for 3 weeks and have about 600 miles on it. I went on one road trip but normally my daily commute is 16 miles round trip and this is not the only car I drive to work. I will not be putting many miles on it so every six months will be my oil change interval.

My dealer wants $140 for an oil change. That seems excessive to me. I would not go to random Oil Changers type places but I would consider doing it myself. Videos on it make it look easy. There are horror stories from people who went to dealers too.

Yeah, I have thougth about buying ramps and doing it myself. Then I realized I have gray hair, it gets awful hot in Texas and I no longer need to be doing that kinda stuff myself.

I hear you. I am pushing 70 so am not so interested in crawling around under vehicles to save a few bucks. What about high quality service places for oil changes?
