Does anyone know the proper way to remove the Climate Control Unit in a Maverick?

Reviving this thread to add some important info. My ‘23 Lariat Lux (Built in July 2023) did NOT have the screw between the HVAC module and the dash panel, meaning all of the clip breaking and trim removal wasn’t needed!

Check if your truck has the screw before fussing with trim/screen removal by sticking a piece of paper between the duct as shown. Also, make sure to properly locate the vents on reassembly - there are holes that can be misaligned.

I removed the vents by using a small piece of metal to pry the upper clip off, the others came off more easily.

Overall, this is very easy to do and it truly is plug and play. Somewhere down the road I’ll disable the temp showing up on my screen - the little screens are FAR more responsive.

So just to confirm, you performed the swap with an HVAC module with temp readouts and didn’t have to use forscan or some other programming tool to get everything to cooperate?

Did you also do this with an older Escape module? All heated seat/wheel functions work properly?

Thanks hoping to do this to my MY24 when it comes in

Meh, when it's cold bump up the heat when it's warm crank up the air. why do you need a temp display to tell you when it's hot or cold?
Funny how thermostats in homes show the desired temperature on a display.

Do you have a piece of tape over the temperature setting on your thermostat as your belief it isn't necessary because "when it's cold you bump up the heat when it's warm crank up the AC".

No Forscan involved! Plug and play. All buttons work, see pic below. It looks like as far as vehicle architecture goes, the heated mirrors are using the same circuit the Escape uses for the rear window defroster. This explains why it's so plug and play. EDIT: FORScan may be necessary, see Post 28

Thank you much! My truck is a lux too so was concerned the heated stuff all would still work. Now I wonder if adding a dual zone escape HVAC control to my single zone XLT would be plug and play and give me the dual zone functionality… 🤔

I’m late to this party to be of any help but if the escape part swap doesn’t work out, @Redneck Garage did an awesome-as-always video on this:

Why would I tape it over? It doesn't alter my decision to change the setting and I have to see it to see how much it needs to be changed. The point is, I make the decision BEFORE I see what the setting is.

Do you look at your thermostat and then say to yourself "oh I must not be hot/cold after all!" and leave it alone?

Heated mirrors and rear windshield defroster are on the same button, yes. Works the same way on my 2012 Focus and current gen Escape off which platform Maverick is based.

I removed the vents by using a junk plastic card to pry one of the upper clips off. The others will come off with a tug after that.

Be VERY careful swapping the heated mirror and recirculation buttons, they are easily scratched. They’re each held with two tabs. Practice on a different button on your truck’s original module first. I scratched the main A/C button on the new module and had to swap it over (3rd photo). Also, make sure you have the light tubes behind the buttons in place. Mine came out with my truck’s buttons.

Overall, this is very easy to do and it truly is plug and play - no Forscan needed. The little screens are FAR more responsive.

For anyone wondering, this is the module for a 2020-2021 Escape. I paid $76 shipped on Ebay.

What is the length of the piece of paper you used to determine if there is "a screw between the HVAC module and the dash panel".

Looking at the second picture I am guessing about 4-5 inches.

Thanks

I have a Lariat and temp display just fine for me . IDK why some need a digital display to tell them where to set it. If hot or cold just set it to whatever feels comfortable..

That's just the tag the dealer gave me with the keys. You could use a standard business card or really any small piece of paper. You only need to insert it about an inch - if it's unobstructed, the screw isn't there. You'll know if the screw's there.

I understand many people are OK with the temp display in the infotainment, and that's totally fine - enjoy your truck! I personally prefer the dials, so I chose to do the swap and contribute to the forum to help others looking to do the same swap.

This thread was intended to answer "how" rather than "why", but here's my rationale:
  • Responsiveness: The infotainment screen takes a second or so to start displaying the temp when you adjust a dial. The digital displays respond immediately, with zero lag.
  • Redundancy: I plan on upgrading my Sync 3 to Sync 4 somewhere down the road. During that process, I might be without a functioning screen for a while. By having it in the dials, everything climate control related is independent of the screen and it becomes no big deal if I'm without the screen for a while.
  • CarPlay: When using CarPlay, the temp readouts in the top corners of the Sync UI aren't there. While my zone may be comfortable, I have no idea if my passenger left the dual zone on full heat or something silly like that. With the displays, I can see what temp each zone is set to... at a glance... at all times.

Sorry I’m just an old school guy… if it’s hot turn on the A/C and if it’s cold then the heater.. I’m not the “just right “ crowd.. although I can be but it’s just not for me…

That is the title of this thread.

Why is it that some feel that they have to post their opinions that has nothing to do with the question asked.

I don't care if the temp is displayed on the screen or "turn the heat up" if you are cold or "turn the AC down" if you are hot.

Those posts are a waste of space.

@Decayed , @inthecabin onto my ignore list for doing just that.

Reviving this thread again for more relevant information. While the HVAC module was plug-and-play in the sense that everything lit up as expected, I noticed some weird behavior with temperature setting accuracy and A/C performance.

I dove in with Forscan and noted the below differences. Most of these make perfect sense (gas Escape vs. hybrid Maverick), but I had a couple observations:
- The ActiveX seats are configured as cloth in the configuration, and have higher medium + high heat settings than the leather Escape seats.
- Despite having heated mirrors, the Maverick configuration has the heated mirror output relay and heated side mirrors configured as disabled. If anyone has an explanation, do share. Once it's colder out I'll confirm my heated mirrors are working.
Update: They work! I suspect the heated mirror output config might be to drive a relay vs direct output from the CC module?

So this swap isn't as plug-and-play as I had hoped, and I'd recommend anyone that does this swap load your Maverick's configuration to the new module.

Have Ford do it, they already have removed the unit with digital display without even asking.
Confused why would they remove it. Early builds has the display on the controls which was removed in later builds. Mine doesn't have it but would not go throgh replacing the control unit to get it back.

Manufacturing cost. The screen is capable of displaying temp, so they decided to do that to save a few bucks (if that) per truck. I'm thankful we still have 100% hardware control of our HVAC, my friend's Ranger Lariat requires going through the infotainment to choose where the air comes out...
