I've been slowly getting all chrome removed from my truck. For those who want that Black Appearance Package look on the cheap, a $7 can of Plasti Dip from Walmart will do it. Very happy with the finished product!

Did you spray the entire part or just the letters?
Initially tried to do just the letters but it was very difficult to peel off perfectly. So stripped it and just did the whole panel. It's all black anyway. Way easier and looks better IMO.

Photos from failure #1 below.

The fender emblems have some plastic tabs that go into metal clips. Just pull. Get them started on the sides and once you get clearance to get your finger under them just pull off.

Cool. Looks just like my XL...without the T.
Yeah, it's somewhat ironic that I've gone through trouble to undo an "upgrade" that came on my XLT. But the Black Appearance Package emblems on XLTs and Lariats are also black.

A guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do...

Some guys are dunking their headlights and taillights in zep purple degreaser to dissolve and strip the chrome off for that BAP look. Couldn't you do the same here? Sounds easier.

I went opposite, with the color match route. Lol

I'm not sure if the badges are just surface chrome or not. Perhaps I could have done that but my project is over now so someone else will have to find out.

I want to de-chrome my truck as well. I've noticed a lot of small interior chrome elements, like on the door and steering wheel buttons, that I haven't figured out how to remove it yet.

I’m not mad at this treatment at all
Looks really good

I was ready to put on XL badges just to lose the chrome (and to confuse people looking at my truck thinking it’s an XL) but I just ended up swapping them from the BAP Lariat that was in my driveway

You say they have tabs, but when you pull do they break off and have to be replaced, or just release?

They'll just slide out of the metal pressure clips holding them in. The tabs are flat and slide straight into the clips.

Pull straight out. Don't bend to the side when you remove and you should be fine. None of my tabs broke.

Tried pulling it off with my bare hands and it wouldn't budge. Not sure how you did it. Is it possible to just spray it without taking it off?
