I can find nothing on the internet about how to access fuses in the engine bay.

I briefly looked at the fuse box under my hood, and I'm not quite sure how you access them.

Has anybody had much experience looking at their fuses? Are there blank spaces that new fuses could be added, by installing the factory terminals?

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but here’s a video that shows how to access the under hood fuses.

I’m not 100% certain but I don’t think adding fuses to empty slots is really feasible. Not “cleanly” anyways.

That was useful, thanks! I opened up the cover to the underhood fuses and then just kind of scratched my head...

So here is the next question... What are these extra dongles attached at the bottom of the fuse box?

Maybe the other one is some sort of relay? I don't remember that one being there on my XL EB.

I've done aftermarket mods in the past that look MUCH cleaner than that thing... Its location makes it difficult to flip the fuse box over...

Your last question makes me wonder if you're thinking this would be similar to an electrical service panel in a home or commercial building. It is not like that, no. You would use an existing fuse, add-on fuse holder, or something with it's own fuse will stay external, say like a powered subwoofer.

The list of fuses is in the manual and very easily found Googling, but the descriptions of each is pretty short, and more critically, the manual does not call it what's constant powered, what's switched, and if anything has a special relay such as how the infotainment stays on for several minutes or until a door is opened.

What are you trying to accomplish? I was very tempted to just write that first. 😆

OEM fuse boxes can very much have terminals added to them, and new wires attached. This has been done in the automotive world for decades, and is a cleaner solution than fuse taps and external fuses. It's just more work to do so.

As far as what I'm trying to accomplish...

It's a moot issue at this point, as now that I have been able to look at the fuse box, I'm just going to use a fuse tap.

Lol

Checking the service manual I think that other connector is C1026 and labelled simply as 'EVAC and fill'. No other reference to it that I can see, but the grey-blue and green-orange are HS-CAN Low and High lines respectively. The thicker black-blue wire looks like it's just used as retention for the female connector being used as a cap.

Confirmed. The cap is easily pulled off, and that's all that wire is for.

Apparently this is something for them to access the CAN interface during service?

Easy to pull

Or possibly for during manufacturing. When I searched there weren't any procedures in the service manual that called out interacting with the connector.

We certainly need to find a reason to hack into the can bus using that baby. There's got to be some practical use for it...

@Telemachus did you ever do this? Which fuse did you use to add a tap?… was it switched or constant power… I also would want to add wires and terminals for a cleaner more oem install than a tap but I’ll settle for something simple …

I didn't. The fuse box under the hood is an absolute nightmare to do anything with.

I ended up just punching through the firewall and using fuse taps in the passenger compartment.
