Scratches in my bed that quick? How thin is the paint?

On my other vehicles scratches will usually only go through the clear coat, most of the time. Does anyone know if the bed receives exactly the same paint process as say, the hood? I see quite a few comments about chips in the paint on Mavericks. This makes me think more about those comments. Also, I'd think it was possible that the painting robots could be programmed to paint the bed differently than the exterior of the pickup, but I don't know. I can appreciate that vehicle manufacturers will do anything to save a few dollars here and there in the manufacturing process.

The vehicle goes through the paint shop with all doors attached - so the hood, doors, bed, and all body panels get painted at the same time.

Here's an example of what that looks like at a Ford factory in Thailand:

FYI,, the bottom of plastic totes are like Diamond tip cutters, the worst. Put a rubber bed mat from Rough Country for $110 and good to go. Stuff won't slide around either.

Wow, really took our first modest trip in the Maverick, we put a couple of plastic tote bins in the back and put a couple of small suit cases in one. Just went to the garage to take the empty totes out and was shocked at the scratches that went through to the gray primer. It seems like they barely put one coat of blue paint on the bed. I knew the bed would scratch, but this seems ridiculous that it would go through to the primer so easily. Does this seem right?

I'd not been thinking about getting a SIBL, but rather have ordered a bed rug, since I removed it from my order, but now looks like the SIBL is required.

I assume there are an awful lot of very scratched up beds out there if this happened to me in this way.

Hi there, I'd be happy to look into your Maverick paint concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end.

Eh, give it a year and you won’t care as much.

I am going to do a SIBL though now that it’s been scratched so much.
Same. I’ll get the SIBL once it starts getting scratched up bad because after all one has to purposely scratch up the bed in order for the spray to adhere. We must scratch up the bed in order to preserve the bed? I’ll just wait.

So, you're saying that if YOU scratched YOUR paint by dragging something across it YOU would not try to blame it on Ford?
That's a unique opinion.

o_O

If I drug plastic bins over my hood or roof I'd expect the same outcome. Truck bed is just painted metal like the rest of the vehicle.

If the scratch only hit the clearcoat it wouldn't actually scratch the paint at all.

And if you're coming from a 91 S-10 - it is more than likely not a clearcoat metallic like your current Maverick is - so it would be an apples to oranges comparo really.

What color is your S-10? I can let you know if it was a clearcoat based on the vin as well....

I know, I know, times have changed for the most part, I'm picky about my truck bed also now days. Large percentage are just pretty trucks today, not used for a lot of work activities. When I look back to the 70's and 80's if your truck bed wasn't scratched up your were a PUS**, your not working. We THREW loads of firewood in, throw in your axes, mauls, steel wedges and chain saws after ya cut the tree up. Dump a tracker bucket of GRAVEL in it or dirt and use the steel shovel to scrap it all out. Just 100% Normal. Crap never heard of a bed liner nor cared, probably weren't even invented then. But yes, I'm picky also now, I baby mine too, to old to do all that hard labor now. But at the end of the day, it's still a pickup truck, a cheap pickup truck, what do we all expect, have we gotten to the point that we need to ceramic coat our pickup truck beds? Mean no offense, etc, I hate scratches too, just reminiscing part of my lifespan so far and how much things have changed. And to the OP, dude, don't fret about thin paint, scratch it all up (the bed), get the bummer 1st scratch syndrome out of your system, then get ya a SIBL and forget it all and do truck things, have fun, life's short. 🇺🇲

It's a truck for crying out loud. I don't like scratches either, but pushing or pulling things in and out of the bed is what is done. After owning 2 other trucks you learn this. I prefer my sprain bedliner in mine, after my experience with drop ins. To each his own. Protection is needed no matter how thick the paint is.

ZERO scratches on mine with 24k miles...because I put down a blanket or something ..and I have hauled quite a bit. Totes would be something that scratches as it slides...gotta be aware...I mean, c'mon...

Thin paint isn't a Maverick or a Ford thing it's an industry wide thing. Before you go on and on about your older cars and their thick paint stop because you are right, they were thicker. On other forums, toyota, nissan and tesla all have paint complaints, too thin, too soft etc.
in the past you could wet sand a car then buff it out to a high gloss. today you can ruin your clear coat with a too coarse polishing compound even getting too eager with a coarse clay bar. I've thrown away all my medium and coarse compounds and clay.
my truck? if the bed gets beat up enough to be unsightly I'll get a bed coating for the bottom and the tailgate only.

No, I know the S-10 is not a clearcoat. My cat has jumped up on the hood of one of my more modern cars and put scratch marks in the clearcoat and they are noticeable, but the scratches don't go into the basecoat. I'm just surprised how a plastic tote bin with a couple of suit cases in it could make scratches that go through what ever paint the bed has and go all the way to the primer, my bad for expecting better. I thought I might have to toss a brick into the bed, or something like that to make the first scratches.

I will say that sometimes it blows my mind what does cause the scratches and then what doesn't. I hit my wife's Odyssey (yes I admit it) with my Model 3 and I've got a scuff deep into the paint but only 1-2mm chip in the entire rear quarter panel where PDR was done.

But a soft branch stick caused about a 2" gash in the paint down to the plastic on the front passenger bumper cover from hitting it in a parking lot.

They're all relatively crappy though like you said - you just get lucky sometimes!

yah dude, the bottom of your totes likely had dust and dirt maybe fine particles of gravel, might as well have been dragging sandpaper on it at that point with how much weight the tote is on top.
