All-Terrian tires vs all-season tires

Update on the change from 225 Pirelli's to 235 Falken AT3's after close to 2,000 miles on the AT3's.
My average was 27.4 and is now 27.2 - I'm surprised that there was this small a mpg difference and am pleased with it. The Falken tires ride great, the look is proper - and - again is what Ford should have done for the FX4 from the start.
What I noticed with the Pirelli's and again with the Falken's is that when I get over 80 mph my mileage drops. Go figure! When I stay in the 70-80 range and combine it with driving around town I'm at that 27.2 for the new Falkens.

I loved my Continental DWS06 Plus on my SHO, they make fantastic tires. I tried to find a set of their A/T as it looked to be the best mix of 95% street performance with enough light off-road weekend capability. I couldn't find them and went with the BFG Trial Terrain and I am impressed. I lost a little on my MPG but they handle well and did great on stone, dirt, and through the creeks. The road noise settled down once they broke in but there is a slight increase. If you're looking for more of a street tire tire that can get you off the beaten path here and there I would look at the two I mentioned. Good luck on the search.

Agreed that these or some other more aggressive A/T tire should have been included with the FX4.

I would have been happy with the Falkens or something like

The BFG trail terrains and the falken at trails are both similar - somewhere between an all season and a true all terrain tire. At this point I would put the pirelli ATR's that come with FX4 in that category as well although IIRC the BFG and Falkens are 3 peak rated and the Pirellis are not.

I like the pirellis a lot more than I thought I would - they handle great and are quiet. For someone like me who does the overwhelming majority of my driving on paved roads they offer a great balance of road performance with some off road capability while preserving your mileage.

My XL I picked up yesterday has Continental ProContact TX tires on it. Never heard of those before and didn't see any clues on them like M&S, etc. as to intended uses. Tread pattern does look like it is designed for hiway and low noise, smooth ride.

I have over 23,000 on my pirelli's no problem probably 15,000 of those miles would be dirt road/no road.. I put the wildpeaks on my subaru and it cut mileage 2-3 mpg immediately but I did get less flats so a trade off.

They're are also a new bridge between the extremes of a AT. Falken also makes the wildpeak trail which is specifically designed for crossovers to have that AT bite but with good road manners. Yokohama geolander and the toyo at3 in certain ratings would fall into that bracket.

I was looking at that Falken trail tire. I think that would be a great option

Yeah I'm torn because of a history of blowing sidewalls from clipping curbs. Good AT tires have thicker sidewalls and side lugs which should help prevent that. We shall have to see how the Pirelli's do. I'd like a 3 peak rated tire but honestly will almost never use the extra capabilities.

I was going to go back in time and get me some Goodyear Aquatred. Best tire of 1992. Wonder if they made them in 245/55 19?

Firestone AT2 tires were the best overall truck tires I ever had. Woe like iron, smooth on the highway, handled wet, mud, sand easily. Only some rare ice and snow here in central Texas, but got me through it

Reason I went that way on the Subaru was rocks. Some of my non-roads are horrid. Had some walmart goodyears on and I lost so many tires because of sidewall. But now I have an old beater of a Tundra with 12 plies. i take it into the bad rock country, not because can't take it but the tires probably won't.
