The Maverick is one of the most interesting multi purpose vehicles I’ve ever seen. The usability across the board is fascinating.

All Mavericks have the functionality of light truck duties with the bed. That in itself is worth something.

The Maverick Is ....

• Road Only eco vehicle with reasonable luxury and safety features. This is my use case.
• Light Duty Service Truck. I believe will see lots of pest control and pool companies using the Maverick. Probably some HVAC service people.
• Suburban / Urban Utility Vehicles that can pull a camping trailer. Weekend camping warriors at the RV sites or campgrounds.
• Off Road Capable Adventure Vehicles – With the Tremor Package, can get the Bronco Sport with a Bed. This vehicle likely can go to Moab and have a ball.

Nothing else out there delivers this in this form factor. Honda and Hyundai have something similar; but not really.

All of these use cases are really cool. In a few years, there will be tons of competition as other manufactures convert their Unibody eco boxes into their version of a Maverick.

With this said, I will concede that the Maverick can be considered a light duty truck; however it is more of a UTE than a truck.

When introduced, I waved it off as just a crossover with a bed and was not interested. Then the reality of how to apply dollars to transportation kicked in and the thought of $35k to $90k was scary. Not perfect; but should serve my household well for many years.

The utility factor combined with hybrid fuel efficiency is key for me. It's not the best at anything (other than bang for the buck), but it's at least decent at most things.

• Handle suburban home owner projects? Check.
• Comfortable commuting vehicle? Check.
• Take the family camping on dirt road campgrounds and national parks? Check.
• Go deer hunting? Check.
• Cruise garage sales for furniture with the wife? Check.
• Want to get into biking or kayaking? Check.
• Start a small business and need a light-duty work truck? Check.

With the hybrid, I can't do real off-roading or drive on the beach, but I could easily go Ecoboost instead if that's more important to me than mpg. It's what happens when you give automotive engineers a Swiss Army Knife and say "make a vehicle like this for ~$20k".

When I finish my master's degree next year, my salary will be slightly under middle class for a family of four, but I can afford this without too much difficulty.

Whatever you do with your degrees, be happy and try to be a good Dad, husband, and person. That is what matters, not how much money you make.

I don't know that many other automakers will actually come into the compact truck market. You see the compromises Ford made to get to this price point, some that Hyundai did not make (and Hyundai ended up about $4k higher in price). Aside from Toyota, what other automaker has an available hybrid powertrain ready to stuff into a small truck (not counting Hyundai, which could make a hybrid Santa Cruz tomorrow if they wanted)? GM and Ram could import existing small trucks from overseas, but they'd need heavy modification, and wouldn't be purpose built for the US like the Maverick. Also, with the industry headed toward electrification, would any automaker bother to design a gas truck to compete with Maverick, when it would probably be a single generation vehicle before they switch to EV?

True. Honda could pull it off. But the new CR-V starts at $32k now, so IDK how they'd get a compact truck off that platform to be price competitive

Apparently me and my wife are right at what is considered middle class in Hawaii, $70-75,000 a year, doesnt really feel like it as we live just over paycheck to paycheck with rarely more that $5000 in useable savings at any point. The Maverick Tremor we ordered will fit all of our need beautifully once we add a cap to it. After the cap and shipping a down payment it should cost us around $420-440 a month. Which is a heck of alot for us but with fuel savings of atleast $100 it wont be too bad. It really is the right truck at the right time for us.

Ordained ministry in my case. I made a pretty good living in my IT career before leaving it behind three years ago. I'll never make the same income again, but that's okay, I don't need anything fancy. I'm just glad there are interesting economy vehicles like the Maverick.

But looking at the way Honda's going, it seems they're almost trying to make all the interiors look the same now. Civic, CR-V, HR-V... That being the case, they could undoubtedly take the Ford route and build a parts bin mini-truck. Possibly even under $30k?

They're not, at least until the supply chains recover. Especially if, like how Maverick is priced lower than Escape and Bronco Sport (at the low end), it meant cannibalizing CR-V sales. Nobody can add capacity like that at this point, it'd be at the cost of other models. So the new model would have to be more profitable. Mind you, it's Honda, so they could end up deciding to charge more than CR-V, but still. Even then, don't expect anyone to come out with new models like that for at least a couple years. Ford chose the wrong time to launch Maverick.

Yep neither of us have ever had a car with AC except for that one summer where our Broncos air worked before the compressor seized. No AC at home either. Really the movie theater is the only time we ever get that for very long, so it will be nice to have a new fully functioning car for once.
