My 2012 Focus hatchback has set a very high mark in the entry level value, durability, and fun-to-drive categories. It is the best vehicle I've ever owned. Many people don't think the third generation Focus is reliable due to the widely-known issues with the available dual clutch automatic transmission, but those of us who have the manual transmission-equipped gen 3 Focus own one of the most reliable vehicles ever made. There are documented cases of the Mazda 2.0/Ford MTX-75 powertrain combination lasting over 900,000 miles. At 153,000 miles, mine hasn't required anything but normal maintenance/wear & tear items except the radiator that was damaged when I hit a fat racoon. I also preemptively replaced the water pump at 150K but there was nothing wrong with the original pump. At 38MPG at 70MPH, cost of ownership has been low.

Give me 150,000 miles on the Maverick and I'll let you know how it compares. It will be a while, I'm only putting about 10K/year on the Maverick! I'll have well over 200K on the Focus by then.
