“ A new ratings program from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety aims to push manufacturers to improve their seat belt reminders in order to save as many as 1,500 lives a year.”

This explains why the Maverick has the “annoying” chime and the instrument panel message. There is an attempt to improve basic Federal requirements on seatbelt notification. This may also bring a better safety rating for the maverick that will translate into a cheaper insurance rate.

But since insurance is heavily regulated in most states, I'm sure that most (but probably not all) of that savings should be passed through to customers.
[PS - See me later if you're interested in some great ocean-front property in Arizona...]

Fully support the use of seatbelts. However, when I back out of my garage to the driveway, I do not need the nagging, already get that from another source.............................

Don't mind it since I buckle up right away . I also always wear a helmet when riding my MC . not a law to wear a helmet in Fla. but wear it for my own safety .

But it's safe to give an annoying chime or instrument panel some harsh back-talk... ;)

In the same theme of "saving the world through mandatory safety devices" it was reported on the new of a bill proposed that would make it mandatory for all new vehicles to have blood alcohol devices to prevent drunks from starting their cars.

Glad we all get to pay for their safety.

I got into the habit of buckling up as a military aviator 40 years ago. The idea of going through the canopy at 240 mph didn't appeal to me. We used locking multipoint harnesses, and I saw them save lives in more than one crash.

I've always scratched my head at the sheer lunacy of my fellow motorists who won't use seat belts, but I'm a firm believer in "you do you". I'm also a firm admirer of the wonderful habit evolution has of weeding out the dumber members of the population.

On the other hand I once watched a drunk driver crash in front of me. As I walked up to his car and looked in at what appeared to be a dead body stuffed into the passenger floor, I was surprised to see him untangle himself and walk away from the accident (with the words "I can't get another DUI"). The officer who arrested him for fleeing the scene later told me (while taking my witness report) that he sees it all the time. Drunks are so relaxed in crashes that they often walk away. So I guess the moral is that if you absolutely refuse to wear seatbelts, be sure to drive drunk.
