I’ve been searching all over for posts from Hybrid owners that regularly run on dirt roads, but can’t find much. I don’t really “off-road” much, but I do hunt down a timber company road that’s dirt, and has a few grades in the 8-10% range that occasionally get small ruts and little washouts. Nothing major, so far as I can tell in my 4Runner. Really want the MPG’s, but don’t want to be regretting my choice. For context, it’s Alabama, so dirt = sticky red clay. Feedback from personal experience with a hybrid in similar conditions appreciated.

If it's like the slick mess, washed out trails and roads I'm familiar with at the hunting clubs you may want to consider the AWD

Until you do get personal feedback, check out YouTube for reviews of the hybrid over back roads.

Unfortunately our maverick gets used in a strictly urban area. Luckily it’s front wheel drive which is better for traction. Have you considered a set of tire chains for the front wheels. I have a set for my Honda Accord and it’s absolutely unbelievable how good they are for off road conditions. It really makes you second guess needing a vehicle with 4wd/awd. We absolutely love our hybrid and the ecvt is not like a conventional cvt which have a tendency to suck off-road. After my experience with tire chains and the fuel economy of our hybrid maverick that’s the route i would go.

Yeah you can probably even look for videos of the fwd hybrid escape off-road and i assume you’ll find more videos as it’s been out longer

I may get a set of chains just for emergency but believe I would never use them. I am thinking I will get BFG TRAIL TERRAIN tires as they essentially are KO2's without the shoulder lugs and rubber is advertised to be better lasting in gravel/rocks which I have an perform well on pavement. They also have 12.5/32nd tread.

My Hybrid with chunkier tires is meeting my needs to get up gravel roads, fire roads so the kiddos and I can explore in Colorado, and a couple of roads were rutted and I crossed them. The suspension was fine. I was asking the same questions you are, MPG vs. Off-road? By upgrading to the all-terrain tires, I have been happy with the balance between MPG and being able to get off the pavement. I believe the traction (hence more All-Terrain tire), NOT clearance will a greater varaiable.
Hope this helps my firend. Good luck.

try searching this forum using "forest", "off-road", etc or youtube and you might find some decent info, the problem might be finding someone that understands Alabama clay and mud in the usual hunting club environment

They are good tires and my first choice but I wouldn't say they are KO2'w without side lugs. The tread pattern is much tighter.

Like temporary MT’s for the 0.01% of miles that need it. That’s a great idea. Any recommendations on a good set? Thanks!

Some areas are slop for sure, but I have a place that’s a lot easier to get to I can park and just avoid those. It’s the couple of hills on “better” dirt roads I really need to use that have me a little worried. They usually don’t hold water due to the slope, but that’s also what causes little washouts. If I lift a front tire am I S.O.L.?

Thanks! Any issues if a front tire is off the ground over little ruts? I don’t think that would happen much for me, but conditions change every so often.

These are the style i have. They lay across the tire nicely and are self tensioning which i wasnt sure would matter when i was first looking for chains. But let me tell you after struggling in the cold snow to try and get chains on let alone tensioned just to drive down the road and hear the chains are loose and then have to get out again to tighten them. The self tension is a game changer. These are also made by thule. I think they are all the same manufacturer in italy just with different names. I really like the diamond pattern. The issue with the chains that go straight across is they can be extremely bumpy because you are basically driving up and over a chain and every second. With the diamond pattern its still bumpy but less so as the chain is more in the middle. https://www.etrailer.com/Tire-Chains/Ford/Maverick/2022/TH01594245.html?VehicleID=20226004636

As you can imagine, being from Alabama I have absolutely zero snow chain experience. Much appreciated!

Come along and some chain or a winch and you’ll be able to get out of a bad spot now and then. I used to know people who used old VW Beetles to hunt in.
If you’re going mud riding it’s completely different.
