The interesting thing with swirls and scratches is that if you view the clear coat as flat, these etch into the surface. This refracts the light hitting the surface, showing the imperfections. When polishing, many think you are removing the imperfection, but you are actually just rounding off the edges of the imperfections causing the light to not refract, hiding the imperfection itself.yep! seen both soft and hard hold well, but soft has a tendency to develop stuff like swirls earlier, but who knows!
id say either white or gray imo, both dont show it too much. beyond that is pretty much preference imo. that being said hes got way more experience than I, so want to hear what he says
what hides the best though imo is glaze!on anything but black
yeah! i usually try to use the least invasive method especially on newer vehicles to preserve the clear so usually ill just use a glaze then some wax, still newer to coatings. and anyways usually i think most people would rether pay for glazing which is faster than a 2 stepThe interesting thing with swirls and scratches is that if you view the clear coat as flat, these etch into the surface. Glazes actually fill in imperfections to help hide them from the naked eye. Essentially doing what a polish would do, but it wears off the surface in a few weeks, showing the imperfections again.
It is also why coating applications can be so expensive. If done correctly you cannot use a glaze as they need to be applied to bare paint. So you will want to thoroughly clean, prep, polish, prep, then apply a coating. It is more labor intensive for sure.
Really nice look, thanks for sharing. I guess I still have hope since Lux and 360 are being produced now. Still waiting ordered 8/23/21Hello everyone! I wanted to start this post off by thanking everyone here at MTC. I have been a long time lurker of the forum and all of the posts have helped keep me sane during the long waiting process.
I FINALLY picked up my Hybrid XLT w/LUX & 360 on 7/7/22. After placing the order on 7/2/21, just a cool 372 day wait! So far I LOVE the truck. The versatility, fuel economy and overall design are perfect for what I was looking for after my Taurus died. The only thing I still need to get used to is the dial shifter and not having a place to set my hand when driving lol ... I also had no communication with my dealer most of the time, but at the end of the day they came through with MSRP, no add ons, no extra fees, etc. If anyone is in the Albany NY area, Depaula Ford is highly recommended.
I pretty much used Gtechniq items throughout. I used the Crystal Serum Light topped with C2V3 for the paint, C4 for the trim and G1 for the glass. On the interior, Smart Fabric and Matte Dash. These ceramic products were incredibly easy to apply really added some nice gloss to the paint after my one step polishing process.
Thank you guys again and to anyone who has yet to receive their truck, hang in there. The wait is certainly worth it!

Hang in there for sure! It is worth the wait and with an August order date I would think that you should still be able to receive a MY22.Really nice look, thanks for sharing. I guess I still have hope since Lux and 360 are being produced now. Still waiting ordered 8/23/21
They were supposed to ... but I received a call less than 48 hours later to come back in. The GM was very angry that it was not performed before pickup, so they made sure to take care of me right away. Plus, that gave me time to go to the parts department and pick up the floor mats with my Ford Pass Points.Congrats-looks great. If yours was in the recall, did it have the recall work performed before shipping?
Congrats on the truck. Just got mine Monday. I may try the fabric protectant. I have a dog that goes everywhere with me. Need to get it treated before it gets trashed!Thank you! Overall there is some minor orange peel but really nothing that bad. I've seen much worse in higher end cars like lambos and Ferraris. In speaking to the clear coat thickness that I have seen some in the forum worried about, I have not seen anything out of the ordinary. The average from what I have seen for basecoat/clearcoat surfaces is around 3.0-6.0 mils thick, with the clearcoat being around 2.0 mils. I have seen anything from high 3s to low 6s on most vehicles and all of my readings on this before polishing fell mostly in the mid to high 4s. Simply put, it seems very average in terms of thickness. For chipping, swirls, scratches, etc. I am interested to see how easily these pop up over time with proper paint care. Hope that helps!
Those readings are based on the Elcometer readings before application of the Crystal Serum Light Coating. After the readings I performed a one step polishing process and coated with the CSL, then topped with the Gtechniq C2V3. There is a write up in detail on the Detailed Image Ask-a-Pro Blog as well, I just can not link over to it.Congrats on the truck. Just got mine Monday. I may try the fabric protectant. Curios... How did you differentiate between the 4 layers of coatings?
I did not notice much rail dust at all actually. I was pretty surprised there. Overall the paint was in really good shape and the only trouble areas were some scratches on the front and rear panels. They were however easily removed with a one step polishing process.Looks good! Did you notice any rail dust/grit in the paint from the train ride from Mexico? I plan to do an iron remover, low aggressive clay, and then a good paint sealant/wax asap whenever I get mine. Mine is gonna be alto blue which besides black is probably gonna be the most difficult to care for but I am equipped to handle it.
