To each his own and I get living the base model life but that ain't me- I need the more exciting features and gadgets that the new cars have these days. I can still jump in my 2004 5SP speed element if I want a base model day- Kinda wondering if he at least had an XLT + LUX if his opinion might change ?

We may say a lot about Toyota and how they will reactively come up with something derived from a RAV4 platform, but let's not forget it was Ford Motor Company that proactively came up with the Maverick, to offer an outstanding new alternative to (non off-road) truck buyers right now, and not Toyota....
Not only did they proactively come up with a solution for the small truck need; they proactively created that need!

When they stopped making the Ranger in 2012, they created a void in the small/mid-sized truck market. Ford was proactive on both ends.

Keeping my Taco when the Mav comes. Have 33's on the Taco with AAL' and lift coils and shocks. Much better off-road and tow vehicle for banging around the cottage. Mav will be primarily grocery getter and dd. Should be a significantly smoother carlike ride. Looking forward to that

they are totally different types of vehicles. If you're cross-shopping, you likely don't need a body on frame truck
I'll tell ya, taking a turn at speed like hooking left at a reddish yellow light and you forget it's a pickup. Less top heavy than an SUV. It zips around great. A smooth ride, too.

I'd think Toyota will have to come out with a competitor pick-up based on the Rav4 or Highlander. And maybe a hybrid with AWD. They need to step it up because they've rested on their "reliability" laurels long enough.
Reliability on the Tacomas has not been good. Just look up Tacoma Rusted Frames. The good old days of Toyota are long gone.

Toyota will have to address its mpg which really hurts compared to the maverick .
Might help if Toyota designed a front end that was aerodynamically better than a locomotive & some tires that are not so oversized.

You know that all the auto companies were laughing at Ford when the Maverick was released and then they ate crow

Through the years I've owned lots of different trucks. Some big, some small, and all of them domestic brands. I grew up in a Union household and we never bought foreign brands of anything if there was a domestic manufacturer available. I did own a Dodge D50, manufactured by Mitsubishi I think, or Chryslers/Mitsubishi 3 star manufacturers joint ventures. But the D50 was just used as a service truck at our Electrical Design and Construction company.

In 2001 I was looking to trade my 2001 Silverado for a smaller truck—really wanted a sport truck. I drove a couple of Tacomas back then and I think one of them had some kind of sport truck package, maybe TRD (?). The other was a fairly base model. Even in 2001, the Tacomas had bigger tires than needed and on both trucks I drove had a lot of cabin noise. There was nothing that appealed to me on the Tacoma. I drove a Frontier and it was very tinny sounding. I drove an Isuzu and it was like a base model S-10 or Sonoma. I drove a Ranger with the Edge Pkg (?) and loved the truck, but it was a little high off the ground with bigger tires than standard Rangers. I finally found a GMC Sonoma SS (Step Side) with a really nice 2" factory lowered suspension package, 10" wide tires, bilstein shocks, moonroof, tonneau, etc., and a very appealing design with silver on gray paint job. It was very similar to the S-10 Extreme. So, I bought the Sonoma. The only problem is that it had a 4 cylinder with 5 speed. Oh, I liked the 5 speed manual, but the 4 cylinder sucked. So, when they stopped making the S-10/Sonomas standard cabs in 2003, in May of 2004, I bought a cherry red ZRX Sonoma with the V6/Auto. I loved the truck and it drove fantastically.

Later my job required a nice truck/car with large back seat area so clients would be comfortable and I was forced to trade the ZRX in on a King Ranch F150.

When I think back of the Tacomas that I drove back in 2001, I just think that I would never have been satisfied with the cabin noise, the really rough ride, and the too big knobby tires. I'm sure they've improved over the years, but I cannot imagine I would like it more than my Maverick XL, which now has taken the top spot from the ZRX as my favorite truck.

I traded my 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport (69k miles) in on a Lariat Maverick hybrid a week ago! I still can't believe I'm driving the Maverick, especially thinking even if I ordered one in August, I might not ever see it!
I drove through a local dealer and two had just been unloaded! One was sold mine the person backed out! It's all about timing. The dealer had it marked up $3K, we negotiated my trade-in and I drove it home the next day! I just added a Ford tri-fold hard cover.
My Lariat only had 3 options so the sticker was well under $30K. Wheel upgrade, drop-in bed liner, and full size spare. I was going to order a Lariat base model anyway! I just filled up and averaging
close to 40 mpg calculated by me.

Ford Maverick He sold his Tacoma and got a Maverick my Ford Maverick

Sold my '21 Tacoma TRD Sport walked away with a nice check. First in like to order a MY23 hybrid at my dealer. Thankfully I work from home so one vehicle it is for what I can only assume will be a year wait.
Lotst of the same reasons I sold mine, I am not towing and mostly haul a mountain bike or mulch from Home Depot. Also pretty excited for a lower floor in the maverick apparently. At 6'4 the taco was a bit uncomfortable.
