So last month I made the good and stupid decision to buy a cancelled retail order from a local dealer instead of waiting for my 11/15/2021 Hybrid order to get built (or not). After 4,000 miles and 30 days with the vehicle, I continue to feel like I didn't earn this purchase. Buying a 2022 Maverick makes you feel like Harold & Kumar just trying to get a decent meal. Imagine if Harold & Kumar just said 'screw it! Let's go to Five Guys instead.' (the analogy works BTW....I ordered an XL and got a Lariat).
Don't get me wrong, I feel good owning this truck and suspect I'll continue to enjoy it for a while. But purchasing a model I didn't spec feels like I didn't complete the journey. So why do it?
1.) As I said before, I got my order finalized on the very last day you could possibly order a Hybrid Maverick, 11/15/2021. My dealer did a good job of setting expectations, saying that this order could easily take over 6 months to complete.
2.) The Maverick I originally spec'd (XL Hybrid, with Co-Pilot 360, spray-in bed liner, and bed extender) was not the vehicle I was going to receive. After months of hearing about supply constraints for all of these accessories, I called my dealer in March to remove constraints that might delay my order until 2023MY.
3.) About 1 week before going on a 3500 mile trip, I got a call that this was available. Given my 2007 Honda Odyssey with 180K miles had a very noisy power steering pump, I was dreading putting this amount of miles on the van.
#2 really sealed it for me though. If I wasn't going to be able to get the truck I wanted in August/September/October 2022, why not get a truck I didn't want in March 2022. I am definitely glad I did. Adaptive Cruise Control is an absolute game changer for highway driving!
I would like to know if anyone else has done the same thing? If so, do you also have a bit of imposter syndrome going on?
By the way, I still have my other Maverick order available. I bought this truck from a different dealership and really didn't want to causing my other sales rep to lose his commission. I'll make a post about if in the Mid-Atlantic forum if it ever gets scheduled. If it turns out it's getting pushed to MY 2023, I'll end up just cancelling it.
