Alright, happy to say I just got my Maverick yesterday. Carbonized Grey, XLT trim, 20L Ecoboost. Here are a few quick first impressions:
Likes:
-Feels very "light." I owned a F-150 Lariat years ago and I have to say that the Maverick, despite having a truck bed, feels more like my Ford Edge I had before this than the F-150 in that it doesn't feel like a large, heavy vehicle.
-Fit and finish. People talk all kinds of crap about how cheap Ford interiors feel, but honestly, everything feels very solid. Even if the materials might be plastic and other "cheaper" materials, they don't feel weak or anything like that. Shutting the doors hard sound very solid and give a solid "thud" unlike many other cars where it feels like you can break the doors by shutting them hard.
-Responsiveness. Coming from a 3.5L V6 I was kind of worried about getting a I4 truck, but I guess the turbos work because the truck accelerates nicely and I don't at all feel like it's terribly under-powered like the other I4 vehicles I've driven.
-Color. Man, the carbonized grey is an awesome color when paired with the black wheels.
-Bright headlights. I'm not comparing to other vehicles, I'm sure it doesn't have the absolute best headlights, but I do like how bright they are, I don't have any issues with visibility at night.
-The option for a standard keyed ignition interface.
-Knobs and buttons for the AC controls and some of the radio controls (but big dislike here too). I know everyone is touchscreen crazy, everything has to be touchscreen, but honestly using a touchscreen requires too much attention and is not safe to do so while driving. So to rely on the touchscreen to change things you might want to do on the fly like the AC or radio is actually not a good choice.
Dislikes:
-Automatic headlights being the default. I REALLY do not like automatic headlights. I don't ALWAYS want to turn on my headlights the moment I start my car, I like to have control over things like that myself. I don't have a problem with the vehicle having them, but I would like to have the OPTION to not use it. With all of my previous cars, I could leave the switch on "off" after shutting off the car and it'll still be there when I turn it back on since it's a fixed position. But now the dial is all digital and it keeps on defaulting to "Auto" everytime I start the car...
-The first button on the remote should always be "Lock" not "Unlock." I don't know why Ford decided to change this. They have always been the one company that stuck with keeping the first and easiest to press button on the key or the fob the button to lock the car. I always believe in security before convenience, and always prefer the first and/or easiest button to hit to always be lock and not be unlock...
-Flimsy sun visor. Yah, exactly that, the sun visor feels super super flimsy. All of my Fords before the sun visor was sturdy and after years and years of using them, swinging them out and back, they always held up. Something I cannot say about the sun visors in other brands I've tried. But now the sun visors in the Maverick definitely feel more flimsy compared to my other Fords. I hope they hold up...
-Auto start-stop always defaults to on. Again, another thing where it defaults to a setting I don't like rather than returning to the setting you had before.
-Shifter dial rather than a stick. Personal preference, but not a huge fan of the shifter dial.
-Physical buttons for the radio are VERY limited, don't seem to be able to change between radio station presets using the buttons and have to use the touchscreen for that... Edit: Nevermind, I'm a dummy, I found out the buttons on the steering wheel could be used for that.
-Keyless entry keypad used to be part of the door handle but is now a separate piece up on the B pilar. This is purely personal preference, but I thought it looked more integrated and less busy when it was just part of the door handle instead of two separate things, plus it was easier to cover while entering the code when it was lower on the door handle. (Yes, I'm super security conscious.)
-Sound system is pretty bleh, but then again it's not like I upgraded to the highest package or anything...
Overall I really like the truck. A lot of my dislikes are just personal preference and are more-or-less more minor stuff that annoy me more than anything. But more importantly are things that I, for the most part, cannot get around with new cars now-a-days. A lot of them are features that have become pretty standard that I simply do not like. Like the headlights, sometimes I sit in the car for periods of time before I actually start to drive. While out in a public parking lot, I just really don't like to advertise to the world that I'm there by having my headlights on all of the time. Of course I can just turn them off if that's the case, but the other case where I don't want my headlights to come on right away is if I'm parked facing into a storefront or into a restaurant like if I'm parked in a plaza. I just think it's rude as hell to shine my headlights directly into the faces of patrons inside that restaurant/store. I usually keep my lights off until I've backed up and turned enough so my car is facing away from them before I turn my lights on. It's just a courtesy thing, but I know courtesy is a complete after-thought for most people because I've lost count how many times I've been sitting in one of those restaurants and some a-hole is sitting in his/her car for 10 minutes with his/her bright ass headlights shining right into the restaurant into my face and at no time did this individual think that might be a little annoying for people...
And I know for something like the auto start stop I'll probably eventually get used to just switching that off right when I get in the car, so not a huge deal, but still would love if they made it stay in the setting you left it... But those are my first impressions. I do very much like it so far despite the things I dislike about it.
Edit: More pics!
Edit:
More pics, MORE!!! I added raised decals to the "MAVERICK" on the tailgate.
The only things left that I'm planning to do is a stubby antenna and a tonneau cover.
