Here in California if you don't pay to register you truck as commercial vehicle you can't carry anything in the bed and cops can tell by the fact you only have 1 letter on the plate (7W30363) now a days the letter is second on the right wear as mine is second on the left
Wtf kind of backasswards stuff is this? I’ve never lived in a State where you can drive a non commercial pick up truck but can’t carry cargo because it’s not registered as a commercial vehicle. 😜

I was thinking the same thing. Then I saw what state it was and that explained everything.

I live in Cali, and was always told if it was a truck, it was automatically a commercial vehicle, period.

No, if you want to see what the law in California is look at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handb...cial-vehicles/commercial-vehicle-definitions/

you will notice immediately that in California, the Maverick is a pickup truck, not a truck.

when in doubt, or if the comment seems strange (even for California) go to the source, not someone’s belief.

If only that was the only stupid thing we have to deal with. Best state for so many reasons, but worst politics in the country ☹
We also have the highest registration costs by far ! I'm going to say a new Maverick if it were $25k out the door, is going to run $350 for the first year, and it will never go lower than $200 if you own it for 20 years.

Same here, it is the default. You can opt not to pay the commercial fee at the DMV and have non-commercial plates issued. Just don't get caught pulling out of Home Depot with your weekend project haul or the fine is a lot more than the commercial fee. We don't notice it but the cops will notice that your tags are numbered differently for commercial (as stated earlier). Part of the joy of living in the PRC.

Here's some stuff from the DMV Vehicle Verification Sheet:

Pickups (PKs) - The following multi-designed vehicles are PKs: Cadillac Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Hummer H2 SUT, and Nissan Frontier (CCR §150.04).

[Figure the Sport Trac is about the closest comparison and it's still a PK]

Pickups-Mounted (CVC §§243, 362, 661) - To have BTM ā€œPMā€, the pickup must have a permanently attached camper shell, canopy, or similar mounted structure, and provide facilities for human habitation or camping purposes. Advise owner that removal of the structure will require commercial registration and weight fees to be due.

Well, that makes sense too as when I was discussing getting passenger plates vice commercial it was with my Tacoma that had a camper shell.

Pick up truck, or work truck, either way, I've always been charged for a commercial vehicle, and even when I protested about it, I was told, I had no choice.
I used to tow a boat. Does that count ? In California, they probably say it was a work boat 😳😠

Boats are known to cause cancer in the state of California…

not owning a boat probably also is.

if you read the definitions the dmv issues it will tell you what you have to do to register it as a passenger vehicle.
Personally I think just not living in California is the best way to avoid CA silliness.

my point was really to trust the documented (annotated) law rather than the laypersons interpretation.

It is probably easier than proving the negative, since it is virtually impossible to prove a negative statement like ā€œmy cargo has never been used for commercial purposesā€

If you bought a lb of sugar for your kids lemonade stand and they offered the lemonade for sale, then technically your vehicle is commercial as it has been used for a commercial purpose.

you might want to read ā€œthree felonies a dayā€ that posits the average American professional commits 3 felonies on the average day.
Then investigate the process of Jury Nullification. Heck just mentioning jury nullification will typically get you tossed off a jury, if you wanted to not serve on a jury.

well its California, I'm surprised they don't make you pay a breathing tax, and sleeping tax, and of course the pretax tax that's used to pay for the people to collect the post tax tax.
