Ford will sell partially built vehicles awaiting chips or related components that control non-safety critical features, it told dealers today.

Dealers will get the missing chips within 1 year to install on the already-sold vehicles, Ford said.

DETROIT – Amid an ongoing chip shortage, Ford is reportedly planning to ship and sell vehicles without certain non-critical chips as the automaker deals with a pile of unfinished vehicles.

Automotive News reports that Ford told dealerships on Saturday that they plan to sell vehicles without chips for some non-safety features, with plans to install them in the already-sold cars within a year.

Ford, like other automakers, has been dealing with a shortage of semiconductor microchips, and have a growing inventory of vehicles waiting for chips.

Ford isn’t the first to eliminate some chip-powered features. GM temporarily dropped heated seats in some models earlier this year.

Wow, knowingly driving away from the lot with an incomplete brand new vehicle. Ford is desperate. I think the supply issues are getting worse, not better.

Hmmm... I guess I'd want to know specifics, and maybe an extension of the warranty since the truck won't be "whole" until the chips are installed.

A month or so ago I read of someone on another forum who took delivery of a $70K (non-Ford) pickup -- heated seats, steering wheel and other options won't work until delivery of chips sometime this year.

I think its going to get a lot worse. What do you think all this warfare related tech is using that everyone is using in the Ukraine/Russian conflict? All this tech that is being destroyed is going to have to be replaced, and what do you think is going to get higher priority, someone's heated seats or a Javelin?

I think this is going to get rough before it gets better, most of the planned chip manufacturing facilities are going to take a couple years to get up and running. And we had better hope China does not make a move on Taiwan, or things will get wayyyy worse.

My wife’s step-dad is retired and works for a Chevy/Cadillac dealer. We were talking about my Maverick order process one day and he mentioned one of his customers has like top trim $65k+ Tahoe or Escalade (can’t remember) that they bought 6+ months ago and doesn’t even have the heated seats feature because they sold it without the necessary chips and will be installed when received. So yes, it has definitely been done by GM, if not others…so people shouldn’t be singling Ford out. I know I was in the mindset of give me my Maverick ASAP and install non-safety chips later when delays started to hit. Luckily it didn’t come to that, and I’ll hopefully have a fully built Mav within a week.

Exactly. I would NOT! It's bad enough waiting for the truck in the first place. Imagine the annoyance of EVERY DAY driving a truck you know is INCOMPLETE and you know at this point, Ford has already taken your money and there is literally nothing you can do to make them get the chips to you. Sounds terrible!

I mean, in that case, I'd much rather have a COMPLETE, stripped down XL than a Lariat with no heated seats, no bedliner and no CoPilot 360. I just can't imagine paying for all those things and driving off the lot without them.

I will say this: the more you see of this "chip shortage" at Ford, the less there is to like.
