You would need a nav specific APIM. If you go sync 4 you need to make sure you get the 8 inch screen apim. Not all will work. I don’t know if ford makes a nav 8 inch apim though

If you do sync 3 you need a gen 4 apim with nav available
They do make a Nav 8” sync 4 APIM. That said, Sync 4 Nav would be a no go since it is subscription based and would require a new TCU and gateway module with the Ethernet network to function.

Sync 3 Nav should function without issue.

We've got cruise control on an XL, extra drive modes on AWD, and now sync "4" when no one has it 😁 I love the Maverick truck club. Can't wait to see what's next 😳

This is my first Ford, what is the difference between Sync 3 & Sync 4?

Sync 4 is the newest Ford infotainment system that supersedes Sync 3. Largest differences between the 8” systems are UI and wireless CarPlay/android auto. Sync 4 has multiple screen sizes though unlike most of the Sync 3 systems.

It should be tied directly to the APIM so assuming we can get the programming correct and everything functional, when the phone is paired over BT, wireless carplay should be enabled.
Howdy, curious, what part of MD are you in?

Thanks.....

So I figured I would go ahead and start this thread. @propp2531 and I have been working in the background on the potential of swapping Sync 4 into our trucks. Non Sync 3 Maverick systems present a challenge since an APIM does not actually exist as a separate module. The screen and software are run directly from the ACM. This means an adapter harness must be made to add in the required APIM and the ACM has to be swapped for a sync 3 based ACM. Thankfully that is fairly easy with passthrough harnesses existing for the ACM and all of the required leads for the APIM connector exist on the OEM ACM wiring. Below are pictures of the adapter harness and the first boot up of a Sync 4 APIM in a Maverick XL. With the easy part done, programming is next....

And for those wondering, this method would also work to add Sync 3 to non Sync 3 systems. Programming of Sync 3 would also be much easier, but where is the fun in that!
Benefits over a dongle like this ?

Thanks Zach, Please post whether you will need to change the antenna for auto updates and does ford charge a subscription fee for downloading updates?

So Sync 3 should have no issues. Sync 4 unfortunately uses a new Ethernet network to communicate with the TCU and as far as I know relies on the TCU for Wi-Fi connection.

Moral of the story, OTA updates for the APIM likely won’t be possible along with the loss of hotspot. FordPass will still function but the APIM will essentially be disconnected from the TCU.

The way to fix that would be swapping in a new gateway module and TCU with the Ethernet network. That’s easier said then done for the little functionality that’s added.

If you are ok with just using a dongle and your phone then this might not be worth the effort for you. I’m doing this because I want SiriusXM integrated and be able to use my steering controls with it
What's the benefit of this over just using the Sirius XM app on Android Auto or Carplay? I spent two days with two different mavericks, a hybrid and an eco and on both AA worked flawlessly with my youtube music app. Just wondering what the benefit is of spending all of this money and doing this work instead of just using AA which should allow you steering wheel controls via the app. Maybe I'm missing something?
